3 Manifest Destiny  Belief in expansion of America  Goal: control entire continent from Atlantic to Pacific  Goal became possible because of Louisiana Purchase This is a picture of a painting done by John Gast titled, American Progress. It represents growth and modernization of the new land in the west. The woman is Colombia, a personified character representing the USA. In this painting she is leading settlers to the west. She is stringing telegraph wire and holding a book symbolizing growth and change.
