3 Vocabulary  indigenous: people native to the land  representation: having someone to speak for you or represent your ideas  Revolution: a sudden and complete change in government or people’s lives

4 Vocabulary  declaration: official statement  Independence: freedom to rule oneself  constitution: written plan of government  republic: citizens vote for officials

5 Native Americans Northeast and South tribes: hunted deer and other animals, farmed

6 Middle West  Hunted bison or buffalo  Used all parts for:  clothing  food  shelter

8 1492 Columbus  in search of new trade route to Asia; Columbus sailed for King Ferdinand of Spain  landed on island of San Salvador  opened the Americas to settlement

14 Rebellion and Independence   1763:French and Indian War (dispute between colonists and Native Americans over land between the Appalachian Mountains and Mississippi River)   Result: Britain’s victory gave them almost complete control of eastern North America

22 Articles of Confederation   first constitution   states had majority authority; citizens wanted this   congress had little authority   afraid of strong government   finally realized state control was not working
