Heat Transfer and the Movement of Air moves ?

Heat Transfer and the Movement of Air Inquiry 4.1 Big Question: How does the temperature of the earth’s surface affect the temperature of the air above it? Hypothesis: Hypothesis: Answer the Big Question – How do you think the temperature of a surface will affect the temperature of the air above it?

Hypothesis If the temperature of the surface is __________ then the temperature of the air above it will be _____________ because ________________________ ____________. Back

Heat Transfer and the Movement of Air Inquiry 4.1 - Materials 2 convection tubes Plastic container of hot water Plastic container of ice chips Stopwatch 1 digital thermometer -Variables we will hold constant (keep the same) : -Variable we will change (Independent Variable): - Data: Table 1Temperature Changes

Heat Transfer and the Movement of Air Inquiry 4.1 Procedures: 1)Collect materials. Practice reading the thermometers inside the cylinders. (Number highlighted in green is the correct temperature) 2)Fill one container with hot water and one with ice water (crushed ice). 3)Measure the temp of the hot water and ice. Record the temp for both on Table 1 Temperature changes. 4)Record the start temp of both thermometers in both cylinders on Table 1 across from time 0:00 (Therm. A is the top therm.) 5)Set your stopwatch at zero. Place water & ice under Conv. Tubes and start stopwatch. 6)Record changes in temp in each Conv. Tube every minute for 3 minutes in Table 1.

Heat Transfer and the Movement of Air Inquiry 4.1 Conclusion: 1)Restate the Big Question. (How does the temperature of the earth’s surface affect the temperature of the air above it?) The temperature of the earth’s surface affects the air above it by 2)Revisit your original hypothesis. Did your hypothesis prove to be true or false?

Heat Transfer and the Movement of Air Inquiry 4.1 Reflection Questions 1.How did the temperature of each container of water affect the temperature of the air above it? 2.The movement of heat is called heat transfer. Describe the heat transfer between the container of hot water and the air. Describe the heat transfer between the container of cold water and the air. 3.Under what conditions was it difficult to see through a cylinder? Why do you think this happened? 4.Why do you think covering the container helped to keep the cylinder clear?
