1 SLMS 7th Grade Science Energy Effects Lesson 4
Light Waves Transfer Energy When They Interact With Matter

2 Part 1 Energy in the form of Electromagnetic Waves travels to Earth and Warms it.
How do different materials found on Earth affect the absorption of Light waves? or How do light waves transfer energy when they interact with matter?

3 BOOK Heat and Light Energy Reading part 1

4 EXPLORE Absorb, Reflect, Transmit
How are the three terms above related to light waves and light energy. Use the following materials to explore. - Hand lens, Mirror, Aluminum Foil, Clear Clear Plastic Wrap, Colored Acrylic, Dark Fabric, Light Fabric, Thermometers.

5 Record Your Observations Absorb, Reflect, Transmit
Material Observations Hand Lens Al. Foil Mirror Pl. Wrap Acrylic D. Fabric L. Fabric

6 Teacher Check Explain what you have explored. What did you observe?
Can you apply the key terms (Transparent, Translucent, Opaque) to what you have observed? Tell me how the light waves interact with _______?

7 Explain What I think about……..
…how light waves transfer energy when they interact with matter. Key Terms: Transparent Translucent Opaque Question: What happens when light energy is absorbed?

8 BOOK Heat and Light Energy Reading integration part 2
How do light waves transfer energy when they interact with matter? Absorb Transform Temperature

9 Part 2 How do light waves interact with Earth materials or… How does energy from the sun heat the Earth. Use these key terms to answer this question. Absorbing Transmitting Reflecting

10 How should we investigate this question?
Which materials absorb, reflect or transmit the most energy from the sun. SAND SOIL WATER PEBBLES

11 Set Up Your Investigation.
1. Write the question you are investigating. Problem or Question 2. What do you think will happen? Hypothesis 3. List the materials you will use. Experiment 4. Draw or write how you will set up the investigation. Experiment (Control and Independent Variable) 5. Make a data chart for your results. Dependent Variable 6. Describe any patterns or trends in your data. Conclusion

12 Part 3 Share and Evaluate
Claim: The _________ absorbed the greatest amount of energy. Evidence: The temperature of the _______ increased ___ degrees after ____ minutes in the sunlight. The other materials demonstrated a smaller increase in temperature over the same amount of time. Reasoning: The materials that absorb more light transform more light energy into heat energy. Different earth and atmosphere materials absorb different amounts of light energy and therefore transform different amounts of heat.
