The affect of adding hot water to cold water on the temperature By: Sarah Fothergill Brodey Wambold

Purpose and Hypothesis Purpose- To see if adding different temperatures of hot water affects the temperature of really cold water, when mixed together. Hypothesis- The temperature will increase slowly as the amount of hot water increases.

Independent Variable, Levels and Dependent Variable Independent Variable- Time (Minutes) Levels- Dependent Variable- Temperature (Degrees Celsius) 0 Control 246 2 Trials 222

Constants The amount of water started with. The amount of water added. Both of the beakers. The type of water. The burner and burner stand. The lab equipment.

Procedure Get lab equipment out as followed. Thermometer Graduated Cylinder Temperature Sensor Computer Alcohol Burner Alcohol Burner stand 2 Beakers 1.Set up the lab. 2.Measure 50 mL. of cold water. 3.Measure 50 mL. of tepid water. 4.Put beaker 2 on the burner stand. 5.Pour the water into beaker 1 and pour the tepid water into beaker 2. 6.Light the alcohol burner. 7.Every 2 minutes add 10 mL. of the hot water. 8.Record your data onto a table. 9.After completing 2 trials clean up the lab.

Results Time (min.)Trial 1 temperature of water added (Degrees Celsius) Trial 1 temperature of water (Degrees Celsius) Trial 2 temperature of water added (Degrees Celsius) The Starting temperature of the water (Degrees Celsius) 0None added7.1None added4.627.4 229.128.250.228.341.9 481.443.486.244.327.8 650.228.310152.343.7

Conclusion The temperature was at highest 101 degrees Celsius for both trials. The temperature was at lowest 29.1 degrees Celsius for both trials. The temperature of the water after the hot water was added was at highest 52.3 degrees Celsius and at lowest 4.6 degrees Celsius.

Conclusion The hypothesis was correct because as hot water was added the temperature did increase as we had said. This happened because hot water has more thermal energy than the tepid water.

Conclusion As thermal energy was being transferred to the cold water the particles of the hot water that was added slowed down. The particles of the cold water sped up. This is a process called thermal equilibrium.
