The Difference between a Relationship that is Nourishing vs. Toxic “Love...does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no records of wrongs...” (1 Corinthians 13 4-6)  There are several barriers that can break down a relationship. We see these all the time and we are aware that they are destructive. However, when we are a part of a relationship that is unhealthy, we sometimes over look things or even worse, we don’t even realize that these barriers are unhealthy and destructive factors in our relationships.  The world would be very fortunate if all relationships were “nourishing” or healthy. However, we know that many relationships are “toxic” or unhealthy.

 These are some examples of relationship barriers:  Fear  Lack of sense of personal or sexual identity  Fear that our faults will be discovered, creating a sense of guilt  Afraid to reveal negative feelings such as anger, hostility and resentment  Past resentments and past expectations brought into the present  Unresolved conflicts with childhood friends, brothers, and/or sisters  The assumption others will expect too much, or too little from us  Lack of self-esteem/self-care and allowing exploitation by others  Unhealthy dependency on another for approval  Being naive (where people don’t understand what they are getting involved with)  Secrecy

TOXIC Lying/Fake/False Manipulative/Controlling Deceptive/Rude Lack of self-reliance and self-confidence in themselves and therefore, bring the other person down. (Often times this is due to unresolved conflicts or situations of the past) Fear is present Rigid and narrow minded (inflexible) Judgmental Pessimistic/negative in their outlook

NOURISHING Trustworthy and Open Authentic Direct/Open and Respectful More flexible/adaptable to change Natural and confident in themselves and who they are as an individual Confident in knowing there is no reason to be afraid of speaking your mind. More accepting of other people even when they disagree strongly with them Avoid being judgmental and critical of themselves or of others More optimistic/positive in their outlook

People Nourishing Characteristics Toxic characteristics How can I improve this relationship Parents/Guardians Extended family or other relatives Friends Other
