1 The Selfie: A Window into Identity

2 Jerome Favre (French, b. 19XX - ); The Hong Kong Skyline with Selfie (2013)
Favre took this photograph of the Hong King waterfront skyline in The air pollution index reached such a high level that the government issued a health warning. Facilitate student discussion by asking: Describe what is happening in the image? What do you see that makes you say that? What is the man doing? Why is he standing in front of the backdrop of the city? What city do you think this is? What can you garner about this man based on the photograph? What do you think the man’s “selfie” will look like? Do you think the man knows he is being photographed? In what ways are “selfies” accurate/inaccurate representations of oneself?

3 “SELFIE” Selfie: a self-portrait photograph often taken with a digital handheld device TIME Magazine noted the word, “Selfie” as one of the top 10 buzzwords of 2012 The word “Selfie” now appears in the online version of Oxford Dictionary and was named “word of the year” in 2013 Frequently “selfies” are shared via text and on social networking sites such as facebook, twitter, snapchat, instragram, etc. Underlined words are hyperlinked to the corresponding article. Photo credit: “A search on photo sharing app Instagram retrieves over 23 million photos uploaded with the hashtag #selfie, and a whopping 51 million with the hashtag #me.” (BBC, 2013, para 7)

5 “Have you ever taken a ‘selfie’”?
Think-Pair-Share “Have you ever taken a ‘selfie’”? If “yes,” reflect on your most recent “selfie” experience: If “no,” assume that you will be taking a selfie in the near future: Where were you? Where would you take it? To whom did you send the image? To whom would you you send the image? In what ways did the “selfie” reflect who you are as an individual? In what ways may the “selfie” reflect who you are as an individual? Student-Centered Activity: Think-Pair-Share: With a shoulder buddy, have students discuss their responses to the question, “Have you ever taken a ‘selfie’?” and the related sub-questions. If “yes” reflect on your most recent “selfie” experience: Where were you? To whom did you send the image? In what ways did the “selfie” reflect who you are as an individual? 7 Changes in identity occur throughout the lifespan.
Identity Development Changes in identity occur throughout the lifespan. Multiple changes occur during adolescence, (e.g.., physical, cognitive, and social changes) Identity development is multifaceted (i.e., self-conceptions, self-esteem, sense of identity) Changes that occur during adolescence mark the first substantial restructuring of one’s sense of self at a time where one is self-conscious and self-aware of such changes. Puberty brings forth a multitude of physical changes. During this time, it is only natural for adolescents to wonder about the internal changes that are occurring on the inside that correlate with the external, more physical changes experienced as a result of puberty. Cognitive changes include being able to think systematically about future and/or hypothetical situations. Social roles begin to change, opening up new choices and decisions (e.g., work, future). Identity development is best explained as set of multiple, connected developments rather than one single development, including changes in self-conception, self-esteem, and sense of identity. Sense of identity: the understanding of who someone is, where s/he has come from, and where s/he is going. Photo Credit:
