Personal-Business Letter What is a Personal-Business Letter? A letter written by an individual to deal with business of a personal nature. Examples: Letter from a teacher to a parent Reference letter Letter of resignation Thank you letter Use block formatting All parts of the letter begin at the left margin No paragraphs are indented

Basic Parts of a Personal-Business Letter Return Address: In personal-business letters, the return address is keyed at the top margin (2.00) and consists of a line for the street address, and one for the city, state and ZIP code. Date: Key the month, day and year on the line below the city. Letter Address: Key the first line of the letter address a QS (Quadruple Space) below the date. A personal title (Miss, Mr., Mrs., Ms.) or a professional title (Dr., Lt., Senator) is typically used before the receiver's nam

Basic Parts of a Personal-Business Letter Salutation: Key the salutation (greeting) a DS (Double Space) below the letter address. (Example: Dear Mr. Chaney) Body: Begin the letter body (message) a DS below the salutation. Single space and block the paragraphs with a DS between them. Complimentary Close: Key the complimentary close (farewell) a DS below the last line of the body.

Basic Parts of a Personal-Business Letter Name of writer: Key the name of the writer (originator of message) a QS below the comp close. A job title or department name may be keyed on the line with the writer’s name, separated by a comma, or it may be keyed on the next line at the left margin. Notice there is NO punctuation after the salutation/greeting This is called Open Punctuation
