Generating Knowledge How Energy Usage Impacts us Locally and Globally

Quick Review What is Energy? – Energy is the capacity of a system to preform work. What are the different types of Energy? 1.Kinetic 2.Mechanical 3.Sound 4.Thermal 5.Chemical 6.Electrical 7.Gravitational 8.Radiant Copyright, legal, version number? 2

What types of Energy are commonly used in London? Electricity Natural Gas Copyright, legal, version number? 3

Energy Demand in 2013 Copyright, legal, version number? 4

What is Electricity? Electricity is a form of energy resulting from the existence of charged particles, in static form or as a current. Copyright, legal, version number? 5 Biomass Coal Geothermal Hydro Natural Gas PetroleumPropane Solar UraniumWind What makes electricity ? What sources of electricity are sustainable?

Why do we Generate Electricity? The most common source of electric energy in Ontario, is Nuclear. Electricity provides a fast and convenient source of energy. Electricity is also one of the most versatile forms of energy compared to other types of energy. For example, you can use electricity to produce heat and sound. 7 Where is Nuclear Power Generated in Ontario? This map shows where the current nuclear power plants in Ontario are located. Do you notice anything similar about the location of the power plants? Why do you think the location is essential to energy generation from this type of power plant? Do you think the proposed location in Norfolk County (outside London) would be a good idea? 8 What about “Hydro”? “Hydro” or Hydroelectricity is electricity that is generated by the movement of water. Copyright, legal, version number? 8

Where is Hydro Electricity generated in Ontario ? Hydroelectric energy is the second most common electricity produced in Ontario. Do you notice anything unique about the location of the hydroelectric generation centers? Copyright, legal, version number? 9 In London, the Fanshawe Dam generates enough power to run 300 households every year. How does London contribute?

Electricity consumption in London Can you identify any “hot spots” for electricity usage? Why do you think these areas use a lot of electricity? Can you identify any “cold spots” for electricity usage? Why do you think these areas use less electricity? Copyright, legal, version number? 10

What is Natural Gas? Natural gas is a flammable gas occurring naturally underground, and is often used as a fuel source. It can be used as a source for electricity, however it is largely used in its gaseous form to heat homes. Copyright, legal, version number? 11

How do we Extract and Use Natural Gas? Copyright, legal, version number? 12

Natural Gas Extraction Issues Natural gas extraction has several associated issues. What are some possible environmental consequences from the issues mentioned in the picture? Natural gas extraction can result in dangerous hazards such as explosions and fires. Copyright, legal, version number? 13

Natural Gas Consumption in London What do you think is associated with the hot spots for natural gas usage? What do you think is associated with the cold spots for natural gas usage? Copyright, legal, version number? 14

What are some ways we can conserve our Natural gas usage? Copyright, legal, version number? 15

Energy Conservation Energy conservation is important for the following reasons: -Saves non-renewable resources -Prevents pollution from certain resources -Helps save money -Helps protect the environment Copyright, legal, version number? 16

How could we assess the ability of our school to conserve energy? Are there specific features we could monitor in the classroom? How would we go about documenting and presenting the data to the school? What are some reasons that an area or room in the school may never be able to reach a high level of energy efficiency? *Efficiency refers to using electrical or other energy (natural gas) in an economically-feasible way. 18 Assignment In groups of two use the Eco-Schools Classroom Lighting Assessment, Energy Conservation EcoReview, and Energy Conservation Walkabout to determine the schools energy conservation. After collecting the data with your partner, develop a presentation for your classmates on ideas that you have to help conserve energy at the school. Copyright, legal, version number? 18

Presentation on Energy Conservation You may want to consider using some of the following in your presentation: – Electricity use graphs in the classrooms – What source the electricity comes from at the school – What uses the most electricity in the school – Pictures of the school using energy – Pictures on how to conserve energy at school Copyright, legal, version number? 19

Going Home After investigating how the school can conserve energy come up with five ideas to conserve energy in your home Think about what types of energy you use Think about how people use energy in your home – Who uses the most – Can you help them learn to conserve energy? – What is their perspective on using energy? Copyright, legal, version number? 20

Homework After going home and determining ways in which you can conserve energy draw your home and places where you think you can save energy Make sure to feature every room in your drawing with tips that your family can do to conserve energy Ask other family members for advice on other ideas to conserve energy such as buying new appliances or fixing a leaky window.
