PermitProbationary Non compliance (not doing) is a PRIMARY offense. Three ways seat belts help 1 Keep motorist from being thrown 2 Slows the body down 3 Keep from sliding

Child Restraint Law Children up to age 8 years of age or 80 pounds must ride in a safety or booster seat in the rear seat of the vehicle. Children under age 8 and over 80 pounds must be in a rear seat and use a seatbelt.

3 Speed Control Speed Control New Jersey Speed Limits Business/residential/school zones Suburban business/residential All other roadways Non-posted rural roadways Certain state highways Certain highways/as posted 25 mph 35 mph 50 mph 55 mph 65 mph

4 65 mph speed limit fines When speeding on a 65 mph highway, doing 75 mph or more (10 miles over the speed limit) fines are doubled. For example…. 68mph = regular fines 75 mph = double fines SLOW down in special driving conditions  Narrow roads  Intersections & R X R  Hills  Sharp/blind turns  Pedestrians  Wet roads What is a safe corridor? A state highway where crash rates are 50% higher than the state crash rates. Fines are doubled on the designated safe corridor state highways Example = Route 22 ; King George Road - Branchburg

5 Following Distances Three second rule plus 1.Find a fixed object 2.1 st vehicle (front vehicle) passes the object 3.Car following counts; one one-thousand, two one thousand, three one-thousand 4.The following car passes the object One car length (20 feet) One car length between cars for every 10 mph of speed every 10 mph of speed

6 Intersections Controlled intersections Define An intersection of roads that is controlled by traffic signals, road signs or a police officer Uncontrolled intersections Define An intersection of roads that has no traffic signals or regulatory device. What are some examples? Rural roads Driveway Malfunction in traffic lights Power failure What is the general rule for an uncontrolled intersection? Vehicle on the LEFT yields to the vehicle on the RIGHT Who goes first? Vehicle on the RIGHT

7 Blind intersection What can cause an intersection to become “blind?”  buildings  parked cars  bushes How do you maneuver through a blind intersection?  slow down or STOP and proceed when safe Traffic Circle What is the best way to maneuver through a traffic circle?  There are no set rules, unless there are pavement markings  Go with the traffic flow  Use common sense & caution  Or treat as an uncontrolled intersection

8 An extra lane on a highway entrance that allows vehicles to speed up to the flow of traffic Points to remember 1. Obey the speed limit2. Speed up to the flow of traffic 3. Avoid coming to a complete stop4. Yield to traffic & enter right lane when safe Entering a highway; The Acceleration Lane

9 Leaving a Highway; The Deceleration Lane An extra lane at the exit of a highway, helps decrease speed as a vehicle enters new roadway. Points to remember 1.Slow down 2.Obey the speed limit 3.Look & follow signs 4.If you miss an exit, go to next one. 5. Never back up
