Dating Decisions Priorities-the goals, tasks, values and activities that you judge to be more important than others. Keep in mind when deciding to date: You and your date deserve to be treated with consideration and respect Be yourself and communicate your thoughts and feelings honestly Never feel pressured to do anything that goes against your values or your family’s values

Setting Limits Set limits on: Age of people you date Where you go
What you do when you get there *Most important limit = abstinence

Abstinence Intimacy- closeness between two people that develops over time Infatuation-exaggerated feelings of passion Practicing abstinence requires self-control (person’s ability to use responsibility to over-ride emotions) Set limits for expressing affection Communicate with your partner Talk with a trusted adult Seek low-pressure dating situations Date someone who respects and shares your values

Consequences of Physical Health
Abstinence is 100% effective to eliminate health risks with sexual activity: Unplanned Pregnancy and STD’s (infectious diseases spread from person to person through sexual contact)

Effects on Mental/Emotional Health
Teens who engage in sexual activity before reaching emotional maturity may experience: Hurt Guilt Loss of self-respect Regret and anxiety

Effects on Social Health
Deprivation of opportunities to pursue new interests or friendships Strain w/ family members

Committing to Abstinence
Communicate your values and decisions with your partner Tips when discussing abstinence w/ partner: Choose a relaxed and comfortable time and place Begin on a positive note Be clear in your reasons Be firm in setting limits in your physical relationship
