.. CRB-FEH Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2003 – 2004 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 1. I took Distance Learning because: ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I wanted to prepare myself for the college level Psychology, I had the teacher who taught this class last year and I enjoyed his teaching style. - I am interested in psychology as a possible major for college. I have an interest in pursuing a career in forensic criminology and profiling. I wanted to get an extra science credit and having the experience of a distance learning class was appealing. I wanted to learn more about history (civil war and the holocaust) I wanted to advance my knowledge in programming and meet new people at the same time. I wanted to take AP history and the only way it was offered was distance learning class - It was the only French IV V class given. I wanted to experience the new technology and get a feel for it I also wanted the college credit from this course Section C

.. CRB-FEH Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2003 – 2004 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments Section C Students most frequently said they took Distance Learning because: They wanted that particular subject. The subject they wanted was only offered in DL. They needed that course. They were interested in the technology. They wanted a challenge, AP or college credit. They were interested in meeting new students. They wanted to try something different.

.. CRB-FEH Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2003 – 2004 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 2. What did you like about Distance Learning? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I liked how we got to see and talk to people from other schools. This gave us different opinions in class and we learned a little about some other schools. The diversity of students and curriculum. I was able to meet new people that have the same interests as me. The technology used made communication between the various classes easy and simple. Giving our school more electives to take…Giving us students ways to learn new equipment…The different atmosphere The opportunity to take a new class that my school wouldn't have offered. It was more challenging than a Regent's level course. I felt that the class was structured well and was suitable for all the sites. I like how Ms. Krone broke up the material with other activities such as movies to help us understand the material. Section C

.. CRB-FEH Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2003 – 2004 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments Section C Most frequently noted as liked by DL students: Meeting and interacting with different students, teachers and schools. The interesting and comfortable learning environment. The opportunity to take a class not otherwise offered. The subject or course material. The opportunity to try something different. The teacher or teaching assistant.

.. CRB-FEH Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2003 – 2004 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 3. What didn’t you like about Distance Learning? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ The teacher essentially ignored the schools other than his own. The teacher didn't always seem to hear us. Not very personal. The class kept going after we had to leave for our next class. Many students unplugged their microphones so we couldn't hear them. Sometimes equipment wouldn't work right and it took time to be fixed or figured out - it was frustrating for the teacher. It was inconvenient when the fax machine from the host school never worked. Things got lost in the mix and it was boring - only a voice, hand and paper on the elmo, and we did not have a text book to work from. The coordination of all the schools schedules in this class, one school would always arrive twenty minutes after the other which cut out on class time. My teacher lectured too much, didn't help me to understand the material, strayed off topic, and he never came to our school. Section C

.. CRB-FEH Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2003 – 2004 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Section C Student Comments Most frequently noted as disliked by DL students: Not dealing effectively with bell schedule or school calendar differences. The teacher’s lack of organization or ineffective use of the equipment. Technical problems with audio or poor student/microphone positioning. Lack of interaction with or lack of attention from teacher or other students. Disruptive students or lack of discipline.

.. CRB-FEH Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2003 – 2004 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 4. What changes would you suggest for the Distance Learning classes? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Section C Set up a time when students can stay after for about 1/2 hour and be on DL network one on one with the teacher for extra help. E-mail should be encouraged and all students should learn to use equipment. After school help, arrange certain day of the week that certain classes are linked after school…Have the teacher go to the other schools once in a while and teach so that the teacher can get to know us better, as well as showing the other students what it is like to be in a remote site. Volume control and network stability…We seemed to have our share of technical difficulties but I guess that’s to be expected with the amount of technology used. Coordinate the time of classes so there is no wasted time at the beginning (waiting for one schools to get out of their previous class) or end (one school having to leave early for another class. Pay more attention to the other schools more structured classes, less out-of-the-box teaching.

.. CRB-FEH Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2003 – 2004 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Section C Student Comments Most frequently suggested changes: Visits by teachers to remote classes and or combined class field trips. Better discipline, particularly re: loud talking and class disruptions. Teachers should use the equipment more effectively and be better organized. Schedule one-on-one sessions when needed for extra help. Technical improvements and better student/microphone/camera positioning. More balanced attention to classes and better interaction. Deal more effectively with bell schedule and school calendar differences.

.. CRB-FEH Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2003 – 2004 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I got used to it quickly and really enjoyed it…I was surprised the first day, being on camera but after that it was amazing that we could learn from a teacher over the TV. How good it works. I thought it was going to be okay and stuff, but wow it amazed me how good the picture and audio came in. The fact that we could do just about the same we can do in a normal classroom. The class seemed like any other class. I forgot at times that the students at other sites weren't in the same room as me…it truly gave the feeling of being in the same room and therefore holding conversations with kids from other schools. How easy it was to communicate and be noticed. How complex the system really is but how easy it seems. I how easily one can do an oral presentation using the ELMO and Power Point. I didn’t know that they were so helpful. I thought it would be like watching TV the whole time but it wasn't like that at all. Instead there was really good interaction between the schools. Student Comments 5. What surprised you about Distance Learning? Section C

.. CRB-FEH Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2003 – 2004 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support That it is unexpectedly easy to become comfortable with the system. The environment is comfortable and enjoyable. It worked so well. Section C Student Comments 19% 24% 57% Most frequently noted as surprising about distance learning: An appreciation for the advanced technology. Interaction with remote teachers and students was easy.

.. CRB-FEH Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2003 – 2004 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments I didn’t feel there were any limitations. Yes, the teacher did make effort(s) to compensate for limitations in the DL system. No, the teacher did not make an effort to compensate for limitations in the DL system. 6. Did you feel the teacher made an effort to compensate for any limitations in the DL system? Host SitesReceive Sites Section C

.. CRB-FEH Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2003 – 2004 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments (If you answered “ No”) Please describe what you wish your teacher could have done. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ We often missed about 7 minutes of class due to period changes and he kept teaching like we had been there the whole time. When we couldn't hear her she would sometimes get angry and I wish she would have given us extra help when we needed it like she helped her students. I wish he would have asked us more questions and used the elmo less. It seemed like the whole time we stared at him writing on the elmo. It got boring. I wish we could have had more hands on. I know it is difficult to operate lab activities from a distance but something other than reading would have been helpful. I wish he had visited us and got work back on time. Send assignments earlier get grades done on time, get to know the students not from his site. I wish he would have sent the work a few days in advance. I had to stay after school a few times so I could get some of the work. He wasn't prepared or organized, papers were sent and received late. Section C

.. CRB-FEH Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2003 – 2004 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Section C Students most frequently wished that the teacher would: Make a greater effort to include receive site students in discussions, Pay equal attention to them and get to know them. Visit remote sites at least once and offer some extra help. Be more organized and prepared. Receive site students that feel the teacher did not make an effort to compensate

.. CRB-FEH Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2003 – 2004 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments (If you answered “ Yes”) Please describe the efforts the teacher made to compensate. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ By planning ahead and and being organized, my teacher avoided complaints…She called on everybody equally even those of different schools. When possible he came to our school and gave us materials we needed or to talk to us…She let us meet each other so we were more comfortable with each other. He organized a psychology day so we could meet other students. [Our teacher] usually waited until third school came on to start substantive lecture. Made a schedule to compensate for schedule complications, Included the other schools equally. Handed back papers the same day the other schools received them. He asked if we had questions, came and visited our site…he called and placed notes on the elmo when there were problems [Our teacher] offered review classes in the morning plus one on Sunday…when we had review classes for the AP test he arranged to go to the school in the middle or arranged for the system to be on so we could have a night review class together which was nice. Section C

.. CRB-FEH Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2003 – 2004 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Section C Most frequently recognized DL teacher efforts Students that feel the teacher did make an effort to compensate Provided extra help and review sessions. Visited receive sites and got to know the students. Promoted interaction and participation. Made e-mail or phone contact available.
