3 SECTIONALISM Devotion to one section of the country instead of the whole country

4 NORTH Center of industrial growth Rivers provided water power for machines Rivers were natural highways Erie Canal Steamboats & railroads invented before 1850 Immigrants land in NYC & Boston and provided cheap labor National bank rechartered Tariffs increased in 1816

5 SOUTH Economy depended on farming Cotton was #1 cash crop Cotton gin increases production (Eli Whitney) Need more land Plantation class vs. slaves (distinct class differences in the South)

6 WEST Agricultural (small farms) More connected with North with new transportation (i.e. canals, RR’s, & roads) Growing fast!

8 MISSOURI COMPROMISE 11 free states 11 slave states Upset balance of power in Congress Great Compromiser, Henry Clay

9 3 PARTS 1.Missouri enters as a slave state 2.Maine enters as a free state 3.The 36’30” line is established. Any territory north of the line would be free, anything south would be slave.
