WHAT IS AIDS? AIDs is a disease of the immune system caused by a retrovirus and transmitted chiefly through blood or blood products that enter the body's bloodstream, especially by sexual contact or contaminated hypodermic needles. AIDs is an acronym for “Acquired Immune Deficiency System” AIDs caused by H.I.V (Human immunodeficiency virus). HIV is a virus. Some viruses, such as the ones that cause colds or flu, stay in the body for only a few days. HIV, however, never goes away. A person who is infected with HIV is said to be "HIV positive." Once a person is HIV positive, that person will always be HIV positive. To date around 65 million people have been infected with HIV and AIDs has killed more than 25 million people since it was first recognized in 1981. so far, there is no current treatment for AIDs

AIDS HISTORY Some theory’s state that the aids virus could have been contracted from the polio virus This was also common when doctors wouldn’t check infected blood An example of this is Arthur Ashe a tennis player Aids is also believed to be similar so HIV which derives from apes in Africa This leads the aids virus to be from Africa

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS? The symptoms of the AIDs virus appear varying on the which phase the infection is in Month- fever, muscle soreness, rash, headache, sore throat, joint pain, night sweats, diarrhea As the virus continues- fever, fatigue, diarrhea, weight loss, cough and short breath If you receive not treatment- shaking chills and higher fever, cough, persistent white spots in mouth, headaches, chronic diarrhea, unexplained fatigue, headaches, blurred vision, skin rashes, weight loss

HOW DOES IT SPREAD? HIV, the cause of AIDs, can spread through any unprotected sex if one mate contracts the virus. This can happen when the body fluids of the infected person get into the body of the non infected victim A person can become infected even if small quantities of these fluids are spread HIV can be spread sexually, from guy to girl and girl to guy, and form guy to guy and girl to girl Sharing needles to inject drugs or steroids is another way to spread the disease HIV cannot be spread by hugging, holding hands, sneezing, or any kind of physical contact

WHO IS MOST SUSCEPTIBLE? Scientists have found that people of African decent are more likely to contract the AIDs virus The reason for this is because of their built up resistance to malaria This mutation that made them less likely to get malaria increased their chance to get AIDs The people with this trait are 40 percent more likely to get AIDs The people with this trait actually live approximately 2 years longer once they get AIDs
