Second Grade Orientation North Coffee Elementary Tuesday, August 24 th 6:00 p.m.

Second Grade Teachers Mrs. Ferrell Mrs. Fletcher Mrs. Freeman

Student Agendas Students will bring agendas home Monday- Thursday. On Friday, students will bring home a blue “Friday Folder” that will contain student work in it. Students will write down all homework assignments for the day in the agendas. Students will write down their spelling words for the week on Monday in the spaces indicated in the agenda.

Agendas- Student Expectations/ Responsibilities Read and become familiar with all policies and procedures in handbook in the front of the agenda. Write down all assignments. Bring agendas home every day. Return agendas to school every day. Transport agendas in a backpack each day.

Agendas – Parent Expectations/ Responsibilities Read and become familiar with all policies and procedures in handbook in the front of the agenda. Sign your name at the bottom of the page each day after you have seen your child’s agenda and he/she has done his/her homework. Write any questions/concerns you may have for the teacher in the agenda unless too lengthy.

We want students to develop ownership and responsibility for their agendas. Developing responsibility is an important life skill. Please work with us on helping your child develop responsibility in keeping up with his/her agenda. There will be a $5 fee required if the student agenda is lost

Student Attendance Student attendance is VERY important. Valuable instruction is lost if your student is absent unnecessarily or is tardy. Reading and Math blocks will be in the morning so please try not to schedule doctor and dental appointments at this time if at all possible. Those with excessive tardies, unexcused absences, and checkouts may be assigned detention.

Student Behavior We want students to understand that when they make choices, both good and bad, there are consequences. All expectations and consequences for student behavior are clearly defined in the handbook.

Parent-Teacher Conferences Parent-Teacher conferences will be held on September 23 rd. Please feel free to contact your child’s teacher if there are any concerns about your child before then.

Snack Time Healthy snacks are encouraged. Sugary snacks keep children from learning as they interfere with the brain’s ability to function. We have limited time for snack so please do not send the individual microwave popcorn packs to pop.

Snack Time Continued Water is the only allowable drink at snack time. No sweetened water, drink mixes, Capri Suns, Kool Aid, or juice. Brain research indicates that water helps the brain to learn, so the more water, the better!

Curriculum and Instruction in Second Grade Big change from first to second grade. In order to meet state guidelines we must move at a pretty fast pace. For some children this may mean doing more review at home than others. If your child is having difficulty, the teacher will work with you to meet your child’s needs.

Curriculum and Instruction (continued) Expect that there will be approximately 20 minutes or less of written homework on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Additionally, your child is responsible for some weekly homework assignments as outlined in the homework policy located in your child’s binder. Now is the time to establish some good study skills – having an organized work space, doing homework in the same place each night, and having adult supervision to assist when needed and look over the work when it is finished.

Language Arts Instruction At this time, we will not be going to another teacher’s room for Reading. All Language Arts instruction will take place within your child’s classroom.

Spelling Spelling words will be sent home on Fridays in the Weekly Newsletter and again on Monday in their agendas. We will have a Bubble Test on Thursday and a Written Test on Friday. Please study the words nightly. We also use Spelling City in our classroom. You can use it at home by logging on at www.spellingcity.com click find a list, and type in LeChelle Ferrell and hit search. Then click on our list for the week. www.spellingcity.com

Math Instruction Normally, we will have Math homework on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. We go over the A side together in class and the B side is for homework. Generally, Math assessments will be given every Thursday. We will be sending home addition and subtraction fact cards for you to practice with your child. The more practice they receive the easier it is for your child to succeed.

Science/Social Studies We will alternate science and social studies units. Students will receive science instruction for several weeks and then social studies instruction for the next few weeks. We will send home study guides before all tests to allow you to study with your child.

Furry Friends— The Fun Stuff When your child is chosen as The Furry Friend of the Week. This will be a special event because they are able to share the things they like, hobbies, family, and friends with our class. To do this Please send in Pictures of your child doing things that are special to them such as their birthday, Halloween, hobbies or special vacations. Any picture that has your child doing something they would like to share. (Ex. Riding a horse) Also send in Pictures of them as a small child, pictures of Family and friends. All these will be displayed on our Bulletin Board in our Room. They may also bring their favorite book, snack or other item to share with the class. They will be the line leader and special helper in our class this week. Thanks for your help.

Communication Communication between parents and the school is a vital part of our success. Please contact us with any questions or concerns.
