10 The Western Balkans  Include Albania, Bosnia, Croatia, Macedonia, Slovenia, Serbia, and Montenegro  Once ruled the by the Ottoman Empire (Turks)  Many enclaves or territorial or cultural units exist  They have a mix of cultures and religions  Economics- Coal, oil, industry are main points but want tourism

12 The Eastern Balkans  Bulgaria, Romania, and Moldova- these countries did not fight as much as the Western Balkans  After WWII Russia Controlled these countries  After the fall of communism in these countries they are now democratic nations  Economics- Agriculture is their main focus ¼ of the population works in agriculture- fruit, grain and wine
