ATTENTION & YOUR BRAIN

September 22, 2015 Aim: to distinguish between independent and dependent variables; to describe the importance of tracking Do Now: Stack up homework and set up Cornell Notes in notebook by copying aim and creating T-chart To Do List:  Complete Do Now  What does it mean to pay attention  Why should you track?  Define vocabulary terms Vocabulary:  Attention  TRACK  variables Homework #17: Scientific Method: Variables and Hypotheses Bring in materials to replicate your Drops on a Penny Lab

Let’s Discover Something  A scientist’s job is to discover the world.  The skills we need to do this are: 1. Tracking 2. SLANTing 3. Speaking with  Scientists, show me you’re ready to discover something new.

Attention!  We’re going to do a quick activity as a class to see what kinds of things affect our ability to pay attention.  When you see the word, say the COLOR of the font.

Stroop Test Pt. 1 BLUE

Stroop Test Pt. 1 ORANGE

Stroop Test Pt. 1 GREEN

Stroop Test Pt. 1 RED

Stroop Test Pt. 1 BLUE

Stroop Test Pt. 1 GREEN

Stroop Test Pt. 1 YELLOW

Stroop Test Pt. 1 PURPLE

Stroop Test Pt. 1 ORANGE

Stroop Test Pt. 1 BLACK

PART TWO REMEMBER! Read out the COLOR of the word. Don’t just read the word. Ex. The word is red. You’d say black.

Stroop Test Pt. 2 RED

Stroop Test Pt. 2 ORANGE

Stroop Test Pt. 2 BLUE

Stroop Test Pt. 2 YELLOW

Stroop Test Pt. 2 BLUE

Stroop Test Pt. 2 BLACK

Stroop Test Pt. 2 PURPLE

Notebooks Answer the following questions in your lab notebooks. You have 3 minutes to write silently.  Record: Which was faster? When the color and the word did match or did not match?  Infer: Why do you think that was?

Notebooks Results: We respond faster when the color and the word match. (Ex. Purple +  Faster)  Predict & Explain: Which do you think would be better? Why? Option #1Option #2 Our eyes look at what our ears are listening to. (They match what they’re paying attention to). Our eyes and ears pay attention to different things.

Tracking  Tracking is when your eyes match whatever you’re listening to.  Track the text= Eyes on text matching what you’re hearing.  Track the speaker = Eyes on speaker matching what you’re hearing.

Practice & Debrief  I’ll read a story for two minutes.  Your only job is to track me. Looking for the best table at tracking.  Two volunteers to watch class?  Which table was best at tracking?  Infer: Which table probably paid the best attention to the story?

Experiment!  We are going to try our own tracking experiment.  I will read a story. Half the class will track and half won’t.  After I finish reading, you’ll take a 5 question mini- quiz to see how much you understood and remembered.  We’ll repeat it but the groups will switch. (Ex. The group that wasn’t tracking round 1 will track during round 2).

“Quiz” #1  You will have 5 minutes to silently answer the multiple choice questions.  Mark your answers on the bubble sheet.  DOUBLE CHECK YOU HAVE THE CORRECT BUBBLE SHEET.

“Quiz” #2  You will have 5 minutes to silently answer the multiple choice questions.  Mark your answers on the bubble sheet.  DOUBLE CHECK YOU HAVE THE CORRECT BUBBLE SHEET.

Predict You have 3 minutes to silently answer the following question in your notebook.  Predict: Which group, tracking or not tracking, do you think will answer the most questions correctly about the story? Why?

Exit Ticket Expectations 51  Silent!  Write in complete sentences.  When done, put in your class’ turn in folder.  Silently pack up.  Homework: Signed Syllabus (Tomorrow) Job Application Worksheet (Tomorrow)
