Problem Solving Block The female American robin can produce three successful broods in one year. She may have 3 or 4 eggs in her nest, or clutch, at one time. If there are 6 robin's nests in your neighborhood and a total of 19 eggs in those nests, how many nests could have 3 eggs and how many nests could have 4 eggs? Can you find another combination using both 3 and 4 eggs that also works? Which of the following is a possible combination of eggs in the nests? A. 3 nests with 3 eggs each and 3 nests with 4 eggs each B. 5 nests with 3 eggs each and 1 nest with 4 eggs C. 2 nests with 4 eggs each and 4 nests with 3 eggs each D.All of the Above

Ten Minute Math DECIMALS Find the EXACT answer. *Remember to line up your decimals! 6.78 + 3 + 2.5 + 9.0 + 5.04 =

Ten Minute Math Multiplication/ Division There are nineteen students in Mrs. Smith’s class. They are planning a field trip to the Fort Worth Nature Refuge. To purchase a ticket, each child will need to bring $15. How much money should Mrs. Smith collect for the field trip? 126 ÷ 7 =

Shirts and Shorts What is a combination? A Combinations is two or more people or things that are combined to form a set. What are some things we could make different combinations with? Examples: ice cream cones menu combinations outfits safe or padlock combinations

Shirts and Shorts In today's lesson, you will explore combinations involving shirt and short outfits. Materials: Distribute the Shorts and Shirts activity sheet to each student.Shorts and Shirts Each student will need eight crayons in the following colors: red, green, yellow, blue, orange, brown, black, and purple. Problem: Each shirt must be a solid color, either yellow, orange, blue or red. Each pair of shorts must be a solid color, either brown, black, green, or purple. How many different outfits can be made? No two outfits should be the same. Record your predictions on your activity sheet.

Shirts and Shorts Discussion: Compare your results with others in your group. As a class, discuss the results. Students should have the following 16 correct combinations: Yellow shirt, Brown shorts Yellow shirt, Black shorts Yellow shirt, Green shorts Yellow shirt, Purple shorts Orange shirt, Brown shorts Orange shirt, Black shorts Orange shirt, Green shorts Orange shirt, Purple shorts Blue shirt, Brown shorts Blue shirt, Black shorts Blue shirt, Green shorts Blue shirt, Purple shorts Red shirt, Brown shorts Red shirt, Black shorts Red shirt, Green shorts Red shirt, Purple shorts

Shirts and Shorts Discussion: Was anyone’s prediction correct? If so, what was your reasoning behind your prediction? Tree Diagram: In addition to the organized list on the previous slide, you could also make a tree diagram or table to solve this problem. For a tree diagram, start with the options for the shirt color and list them: Next, think about what color pants could be worn with the yellow shirt? Could those same colors be worn with all the other shirts? Yellow Orange Blue Red

Shirts and Shorts Tree Diagram: On your paper, a tree diagram may look something like this: Yellow Orange Blue Red

Table: Another way to organize data is to create a table. First, list the possible shirt and short choices. Then, Fill in the table. : Shirts and Shorts

Table: Your table might look like this on your paper. : Shirts and Shorts

Do you notice a general rule or pattern? Could we use multiplication, division, addition or subtraction to solve? How did your prediction compare to your actual answer? How do you explain this? Which method would be more efficient for finding the total number of outfits: multiplying, drawing a tree diagram, or making a table? Which method would be more useful for identifying the different combinations (outfits) possible: multiplying, drawing a tree diagram, or making a table? Shirts and Shorts

Independent Practice Extension: Ice Cream Cones Shirts and Shorts
