Textbook Scientific Calculator (~$10) 3-ring Binder (~$3) ◦ Or a note book, something to keep your materials in To keep ALL of your labs Pens/pencils
5
You will be graded on a total points system with approximate breakdowns of: Total Points 2000-2300 Labs (25 pts. each) Homework (10pts each) Quizzes (10-40pts each) Tests (100-150 pts each) Projects (50 pts each – 1-2 per semester)
6
Coursework will be assigned so that 30% of the student’s grade comes from daily activities, homework, quizzes and class work with the other 70% coming from scores on major assessments, essay assignments, lab reports and major projects. Assignments within each category will be worth different point values based on the expectations of those assignments.

Chemistry Homework !!! Linus Pauling - 1967 “ Chemistry is not a spectator sport, you must become involved, and that means that you must do homework!”
9
Learn chemistry Learn problem solving strategies Discover how you learn best ◦ Memorize this... ◦ Why was the second one easier? It was organized in a way that made sense to you. fjiwlsqin chemistry
10
What is chemistry? The study of the composition of matter and the changes it undergoes.
11
What is matter? What stuff is made of. Chemicals Anything that has... ◦ mass ◦ inertia (resistance to change in motion) ◦ takes up space ◦ energy
12
Proper measurement and lab techniques The structure of an atom The arrangement of the periodic table The reactivity of elements Writing chemical formulas and equations Determining amounts of reactants and products The behavior of gases Acids and bases
13
People need ◦ Food, water ◦ Clothing ◦ Shelter ◦ Energy
14
Reduce starvation ◦ Preservatives ◦ Fertilizers ◦ Pesticides Improve shelter ◦ Shingles ◦ Sheetrock ◦ Insulation ◦ Paints
15
Improve clothing ◦ Synthetics (rayon, nylon, polyester) make clothes cheaper, stronger, lighter ◦ synthetic footwear Improve our health ◦ Medicines ◦ Antibiotics ◦ Vitamin supplements ◦ Fire prevention ◦ Forensics ◦ Antiterrorism
16
Develop and improve conveniences ◦ Plastics ◦ Foams ◦ Vinyl ◦ Alloys ◦ Fiberglass Used in cars and electrical appliances
