Croatia - National report Regional Workshop 2: Improving Capacity for Diagnosis of Fish and Mollusc Diseases Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina, 20-24 October 2013, Hotel Palas

Production data 2012 Today Croatia reaches production of 16.000 tons acuaqulture products: 4.400 tons carp and trout (šaran i pastrva), 4.000 tons tuna, 4.000 tons sea bass &sea brem (lubina i komarča) 3.500 tons shellfish mussels and oysters (dagnji i kamenica)

Fish and shellfish farms in Croatia (current status)

 Movement/transfers  EU – certificate - TRACES  Internal market – health certificate  Importation of eggs/fry/live fish  After accession, Denmark  No imports from BiH!!! Movement of live animals

Diseases recorded in the country  Viral diseases  VHS  Bacterial diseases  Aeromonas hydrophila, Vibrio anguillarum, Tenacibaculum maritimum, Flavobacteruim psychrophila, Yersinia ruckeri,  Parasitic diseases  Infection with Marteilia refringens  Sea bass/bream – Sea lice

 Fungal diseases No records  Other health problems No other diseases detected

Diagnostic capacity in the country  Aquatic animal diseases laboratory within country  HVI Zagreb, National reference laboratory  Description (diagnostic, research, education)  VETERINARY UNIVERSITY ZAGREB  INSITUTE RUĐER BOŠKOVIĆ  INSTITTUE FOR OCEANOGRPAHY AND FISHERIES  Scope and species interest  Fish – freshwater, marine  Molluscs  Crustacean

Level of diagnostic in Croatia  Level of diagnostic:  Level 1: Gross observation, general necropsy (external, internal)  Level II: Bacteriology, Parasitology, Mycology, Histology  Level III: Cell lines, Immunological tests, TEM, Molecular techniques

Analysis of diagn o stic capacity  List of diseases and diagnostic methods used  VHS, IHN, IPN,KHV,SVC – clinical observation, detection of gross changes, histological observation, isolation of virus on cell culture, identification by ELISA, IFAT, RT-PCR, qRT-PCR, gene sequencing  Furunculosis, Vibriosis, Yersiniosis, Tenacibaculosis – Isolation of bacteria on bacteriological media, identification of genus by selective media and general properties, identification of the species by API or any other kit for biochemical identification, serological identification, PCR, sequencing.  Mollusc diseases – citology, histology, PCR, sequencing

Surveillance of nationally listed diseases Surveillance and diagnosis are conducted only for pathogens listed in OIE and EU, on species present in Croatia Exception ISA on trout OSHV1 – in Ostrea edulis White spot disease in crustaceans

Surveillance and monitoring of other pathogens Targeted pathogens and aquaculture species  VHS/IHN – salmonids  KHV – carp  Infection with Bonamia ostreae – Oysters  Infection with Marteilia refringens – Mussels, oysters

Study of abnormal mortality Mortality description Mortalities reported by fisherman Mortalities recorded in 2013 – Eustrongyloides Suspect case of KHV – put and take fisheries – ruled out

Conclusions and perspectives Inroduction of new diagnostic tehniques – diagnostic of white spot disease, monitoring/antimicrobial resistance, further improvment of control and diagnostic tehniques in marine fish Education of laboratory staff, proficiency test, education of governemnt officals in aquatic animal health issues
