RESOURCES AND NEEDS IN FISHERY Croatia underutilized natural resources in fisheries (45,000 t catch, 16,000 t aquaculture). Estimates of fishing capacity in the Croatian part of Adriatic Sea is about 100,000 tons Estimated fish consumption in Croatia is only 9 kg / pc, and the world average is 16 kg / pc, EU 26 kg/pc

Number of companies, income, employees (2010) ( without Artisans ) Fishing –No of companies 125 –Income 251 mil. Kn (33,5 million €) –No employees 865 Aquaculture –No of companies 101 –Income 591 mil. Kn (79 million €) –No employees 851

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF AQUACULTURE According to the strategic projections and available resources Croatia could achieve an annual production: - freshwater fishes - 15,000+ tons - white marine fishes - 15,000 tons - shellfish farming - 20,000 tons - tuna farming (?) - 4,000 tons

What will require a program to increase production  improvement of positive political and economical frendly environment for development of aquaculture sector,  social acceptance and competitiveness of aquaculture  high investments – EU and national funds  marketing strategy - increase in consumption  Simplify administrative procedures - access to space and licensing time  compatibility between users of coastal areas - coordinated spatial planning  multifunctional farms  promotion of environmental criteria - increasing the sustainability  improvement of environmental friendly technology  Introduction of modern farming technology, improvment of reproductive centers - national program of selective breeding,  fishfeed

STRATEGY OF AGRICULTURE AND FISHERIES (NN 89/02) The national program of fish production and consumption Operational Programme Development of Aquaculture The main objectives of the program: - To bring Croatia between leading countries of the Mediterranean in the field of marine fish and shellfish culture, - increase total annual production of freshwater fish, - achieve efficiency at the level of international competition and to respect the highest environmental and quality standards.
