Materials to Prep Giant slates @ tables Food web sort @ tables Food web label cards @ teacher’s desk, pass out before 2 nd activity in lab

Bellwork HAVE SLATE, MARKER & ERASER ON DESK!!! 1.List all of the ingredients from the last meal you remember 2.For EVERY ingredient, describe where its energy came from (what did it eat, or how did it make its own energy?) 3. Look back in your scientific method notetaker…what goes in each of the 3 parts of a hypothesis? (NOT if, then, as measured by…) 4.What is the procedure for diSmiSSal? (hint, think about the 3 S’s…) ***Review your biome poster notes from yesterday

Bellwork 1. Look at the 8 levels of organization on the back of your notetaker from yesterday. Come up with your own real life version for each level (see my example below- you can use “Earth” ) Biosphere = Earth Ecosystem = Rainforest Community = trees, birds, and bugs in the area Population = all of the toucans Organism = a single banana tree Tissue/Organ = A panther’s heart Cell = A brain cell Atom/Molecule = H2O Example!

yesterday’s computer lab paper Bellwork 1. Leave your BW blank, but put it out so I can stamp while you work….. 2. On the back of yesterday’s computer lab paper (lined paper if you were absent) set up the HW like the board (2 mins) 

(on back of yesterday’s paper from computer lab) 3 Science Fair Possibilities – due MON. 9-8-14 Title: Question: T: E: R: M: Title: Question: T: E: R: M: Title: Question: T: E: R: M:

Announcements Critter due TOMORROW!!! Science Fair Fill out TERM for three possible questions- due MONDAY What does TERM stand for?

Science Fair Question Guidelines (add applicable info to front of lab/HW paper) – Has to be an EXPERIMENT where you collect your OWN DATA (not observation or research only) – Using people as test subjects/surveys? Need 100+ total – Building something? Must be an IMPROVEMENT on an existing thing OR something new entirely (a new kind of solar cell, etc.) – Sports? Must build a contraption to kick/throw ball etc. so that it is done the exact same every time

Organisms & Energy Flow (notes on lined paper)

Why study roles of organisms? Populations of different species play different roles in the environment, often creating a unified system. …think of a band (different instruments play different sounds to create the overall harmony)

Autotroph = organism that makes food for itself (producer) Autotrophs “Self”“food”

Based on the definition we just wrote down, what are some examples of autotrophs? Talk to Your Partner

Autotroph = organism that makes food for itself (producer) -Plants & some bacteria Autotrophs “Self”“food”

Heterotroph = organism that eats other organisms (consumers) Heterotrophs “Different” “food” I must be a heterotroph, since I can’t synthesize these!

Heterotroph = organism that eats other organisms (consumers) -Animals, fungus, bacteria Heterotrophs “Different” “food”

http://videos.howstuffworks.com/discovery/29542-assignment- discovery-autotrophs-and-heterotrophs-video.htm Quick video comparison

Try this! (5 mins) At your lab table: Work as a group to quickly sort the cards & use arrows to show which direction energy is flowing Example:

2 Big Categories of Organisms Make a T-chart Autotrophs/ Heterotrophs/ Producers Consumers

There are two types of autotrophs/producers

Autotrophs 1. Phototroph : use energy from sun to make food (photosynthesis)

Autotrophs 2. Chemotrophs : use energy from chemicals to make food Ex- Bacteria in deep sea vents

There are many types of heterotrophs Tell neighbor as many types as you can Hint: A cow is one type

Heterotrophs 1.Herbivores : eat ONLY plants 2.Omnivores : eat BOTH plants & animals 3.Carnivores : eat ONLY meat

Heterotrophs 4. Scavengers: feed on dead organisms Ex. – Vultures, Shrimp, Mealworms!

Heterotrophs 5. Decomposers : Absorb dead materials/waste & break them down into fertilizers for plants Ex. – bacteria, mushrooms

Try this! (Part 2) Add organism terms to the cards at your lab table Example: Omnivore

Closure 1.On BW (blank from today)- Draw a simple food web that includes your CRITTER 2.Label each organism with vocab- herbivore, phototroph, etc. (must have at least one producer & 3 different kinds of consumers) 3.When finished, update your unit divider (see board)

Closure- in notebook Take one of the organisms you listed from your last meal to start a simple food chain with at least 5 organisms TOTAL (including at least one phototroph). Label each organism with the type of autotroph or heterotroph it is (herbivore, scavenger, etc.).
