September 23, 2015 Objectives: I CAN..... 1-I can classify organisms as producers, consumers, scavengers, or decomposers according to their role in a food chain or web

Classifying Organisms Its all about where you get your energy!

Thinks about it. Where do you get your energy?

An organism is ….. Any independent living thing Can be as small as a single celled bacteria Or as large as a whale!

The three categories of the food chain are….. 1) Producers 2) Consumers 3) Decomposers They are all depend on each other.

Producers Are- Producers get their food and energy from the sun. Classified as autotrophs because they can make their own food. Example plants. They make their food through a process called photosynthesis.

Consumers Consumers need to consume/eat their food to get energy. Classified as heterotrophs. Cannot make their own food.

Types of consumers are There are THREE types of Consumers  Carnivores  Herbivores  Omnivores. Its still all how organisms obtain energy through what they eat.

Carnivores only eat meat and are known as secondary consumers.

Herbivores eat only plants and are known as primary consumers.

Omnivores eat both meat (animals) and plants. They are known as opportunistic feeders.

Stop…Review…Check… Turn to your partner and tell them the meaning of each word. Also give two examples of each. Carnivore: Herbivore: Omnivore:

Decomposers Decomposers break down dead things and through a chemical reaction, turn them back into dirt, or soil. Examples:  Mushrooms  Worms  Bugs

What would the world look like without decomposers (bacteria and fungi?

Scavengers an animal that feeds on carrion, dead plant material, or refuse. They are different from decomposers in that they eat dead organisms and do not break them down through a chemical reaction.

How they relate.

Stop…Review…Check… Turn to your partner and tell them the meaning of each word. Also give two example of each. Producers: Consumers: Decomposers:

Describe the following animals as either a producer, consumer or decomposer. For the consumers, make sure to include if they are a carnivore, herbivore or omnivore. Please use complete sentences! (Ex: A _____ is a ______.) 1. Bear 2. Shark 3. Rabbit 4. Cherry tree 5. Mushroom 6. Human 7. Tulip (flower) 8. Panther 9. Giraffe 10. Worm

Putting it together Complete the classifying organism skill sheet. Finish for homework if necessary. (Due Tomorrow)
