3 George’s Life He was born on February 22, 1732 in Westmoreland County, Virginia. As a young man he was named surveyor of Culpepper County. He married Martha Dandridge Custis on January 6, 1759. She had two children, Jack and Martha, from a previous marriage. He died on December 14, 1799 at the age of 67. George Washington [online]. 4 The First President George Washington was inaugurated the first President of the United States on April 30, 1789. George helped to create the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution. When George Washington became the first President there were only 11 States in the Union. He helped to create the federal court system and in 1791 the states approved the Bill of Rights. 6 Myths about George Washington Did George Washington have wooden teeth? He had several sets of dentures (false teeth), but none of them was made of wood. New York City dentist John Greenwood made Washington's first set of false teeth out of hippopotamus ivory. Did George chop down a cherry tree as a boy?
