6 The Basics A reading and math lab are required Receive.5 hour of credit for lab class You will tutor up to 1 hour 15 minutes twice a week, depending on which lab(s) you are completing Receive a separate grade for lab class Your lab work will figure into your methods course grade

7 Tutoring Requirements The Basics… We will place you with a student within the next week. You will call the parent to find out about the child and to finalize a schedule with the parent. You will begin tutoring within a week of receiving your placement. You will submit a lesson plan for approval for each tutoring session. Tutoring will continue through November.

8 Lab Schedule Planning Monday-Thursday 9:00-3:00 Friday 9:00-12:00 Tutoring Monday-Thursday 3:00-6:00

9 Lesson Plans Paper/pencil plans are due by noon the day of tutoring. TaskStream plans are due by 9:00am the day of tutoring.

15 Before You Tutor Review the child’s file Call the parent Prepare for the first session Professional manner Arrive early Locate resources in the Ed Lab and CMC

16 Calling the Parent Call parent within 2 days of placement If you need to leave a message, be clear and professional. Give them your contact information. Listen carefully to what they say about the child. Take good notes. Set your tutoring times and days.

18 On Your First Day Tutoring… Meet the parent outside the Ed Lab. They will be coming in to sign papers Wear your name tag Talk with the parent about where and when they will pick up the child Have parents see Ed Lab staff for any necessary paperwork

19 First Day Plan Get acquainted Topics you can discuss: –Pets –Brothers & sisters –Favorite food –Favorite books –Favorite things to do Tour the Ed Lab Make a mailbox (one for your learner and one for you)

20 First Day continued… Work on an interest inventory Structured Activities with your student Choose math assessments –Pick three math assessments from the Math Packet…consider grade level, math need, things that look fun, etc. –Play a math game

21 First Day continued… Choose books for the first day –Pick two or three books from the Ed Lab collection…based on student interest, grade level, your favorites, etc. –Complete a Response Activity Set goals for your time together

22 Reading Second Day Plan Read Aloud Student reading (five finger test or informal reading conference) Retelling What do good readers do? What do good writers do?

23 Turning in your plans You will need a two-pocket folder Drop off box Pick-up box –What if my folder isn’t in the pick up box?

25 Before You Leave Today Fill out and leave your Checklist(s) Sign the “Permission to Photograph” Get your Map Quest Take first week plans with you Ask any questions you may have
