2 Basic Dialectical Tensions in Relationships
Suggested by Leslie A. Baxter Novelty-predictability: The need for a balance of spontaneousness along with predictability. Autonomy-Connection: Ability to feel both autonomous and connected. Openness-Closedness: Need to be able to be both open and private.

3 Six Dialects of Intercultural Relationships
Personal-Contextual Dialectic Relationships are both personal and contextual Personal remains consistent regardless of situation Contextual can be influenced based on outside sources such as family, religion, friends, TV, societal expectations and stereotypes to name a few. This can also largely influence who we are attracted to.

4 Six Dialects Continued
Differences-Similarities Dialectic Shown that the most successful relationships contain a balance of both differences and similarities simultaneously Similarity principle: Principle that people are usually attracted to those that they see as similar to themselves. Cognitive consistency: Seeking out those who share similar views, values, morals and beliefs. Intercultural relationships allow us to move away from these safety nets and explore relationships with people we view as different from ourselves.

5 Six Dialects Continued
Cultural-Individual Dialectic Intercultural relationships consist of communication that is both cultural and individual at the same time, while affecting communication both verbally and non-verbally. Privilege-Disadvantage Dialectic Important to understand within intercultural relationships because a person may be disadvantaged in a certain setting that another person is privileged in. Static-Dynamic Dialectic The idea that relationships are constantly susceptible to change both personally and contextually. History/Past-Present/Future Dialectic The understanding that past or historical events can affect both the opportunities or ability to engage in an intercultural relationship.

6 Intercultural Relationships
There are three communication approaches in understanding an intercultural relationship Social Science Interpretive Critical

7 Social Science Approach: Cross Cultural Differences
The Social Science approach studies and identifies the cross cultural differences in a relationship Differences in notions of friends Identity and values vary from culture to culture which can affect the meaning of or views on friendship. Examples from book: Western culture emphasizes individuality and romances friendships China (who strongly enforces collectivism) understands friendships through the concept guanxi: a social/relational network founded on shared identities. Differences in Relational Development The different ways in which cultural differences affect initial interactions with people can complicate intercultural relationships. Example from book: people in one country may view strangers openly and speak to them while people from another country may become suspicious of strangers with no intention to greet them, therefore no ability to engage in a potential relationship.

8 Questions True or False Multiple Choice
The principle that individuals tend to become attracted to those who they view as similar to themselves is known as guanxi. Multiple Choice The dialect that suggests people and relationships are constantly susceptible to change both contextually and personally is known as: A. Privilege-Disadvantage Dialectic B. Personal-Contextual Dialectic C. Static-Dynamic Dialectic D. Differences-Similarities Dialectic
