3 Chapter 2 Terminology Tendency to view one’s own culture and group as superior – can lead to discrimination Extreme self-centeredness Certain things are common to all cultures Group of interdependent people who have organized to share a common culture The development of economic and social relationships that stretch around the world

4 Values A new value that has developed since we learned about the damage of clearing forests and building factories American value that is based on the belief that judgments should be based on a sense of right and wrong Commitment to the full development of ones’ personality This group rejects some of societies important values and norms These groups in society share values, norms, and behaviors not shared by the entire population but that do not reject societies basic norms and values

5 Cultural Change Most common form of cultural changes that happens when traits from one society spread to another. Situation in which some aspects of culture change less rapidly Process in which cultures become more and more alike Cultural change can occur when people use existing knowledge to create something that did not previously exist (hint: Einstein, Gates, Jobs, Whitney) Cultural change can occur when people recognize new uses for existing elements in the world (hint: Gold Rush, Man vs. Wild, Shark Week, Swamp Brothers)
