Psychological Disorders

Some Humor Before We Get Started…

Defining Psychological Disorders Psychological Disorder: a harmful dysfunction in which behaviors are maladaptive, unjustifiable, disturbing, and atypical. Remember the acronym: MUDA Maladaptive: destructive to ones self and others Unjustifiable: without rational basis Disturbing: troublesome to other people Atypical: so different that it violates a norm.

Read the 4 examples on page 560…which individuals have PD?

Can you think of your own examples of MUDA? What does maladaptive behavior look like? What does unjustifiable behavior look like? What does disturbing behavior look like? What does atypical behavior look like?

Psychological Disorders are Diverse and Ever-Evolving Although all psychological disorders exhibit MUDA they are not all the same; PD are wide ranging, in some cases are difficult to diagnose, and can be controversial PD run the spectrum from those that are quite common like depression to those are rare like schizophrenia Our understanding of PD is a work in progress and has and will continue to change over time and as we learn more

Examples of our evolving understanding. In antiquity certain civilizations thought that PD were demonic possessions while others thought that they were punishments to individual for sins committed Before 1980 there was no clinical diagnosis for PTSD and it was even referred to as “shellshock.” It was primarily attributed it to those who had experienced trauma during war Our understanding of PD is constantly evolving. For example: hoarding has just been recently added to the DSM 5 as a psychological disorder. Other disorders that have been recently added include: Skin-picking/excoriation Body Dysmorphic Disorder Binge-eating & purging Hair-Pulling Disorder/Trichotillomania

The Medical Model In past centuries those who suffered mental illness were mistreated, exiled to asylums, or executed. By the 1700s people began to regard PD as a illness that could be treated rather than as a demonic possession. This idea lead to the medical model: the notion that mental illnesses have physical causes that can be diagnosed, treated and in some cases cured. This embrace of the medical model lead to more ethical treatment of individuals with PD and exploration of various treatment methods for those who suffer from PD.

Final Activity On the card provided list what you fear most. Then give an example of what this fear would actually look like according to each criteria of MUDA. Lastly, describe what an reasonable/ethical treatment would be for your disorder.
