In antiquity certain civilizations thought that PD were demonic possessions while others thought that they were punishments to individual for sins committed Before 1980 there was no clinical diagnosis for PTSD and it was even referred to as “shellshock.” It was primarily attributed it to those who had experienced trauma during war Our understanding of PD is constantly evolving. For example: hoarding has just been recently added to the DSM 5 as a psychological disorder. 9. + The Medical Model In past centuries those who suffered mental illness were mistreated, exiled to asylums, or executed. By the 1700s people began to regard PD as a illness that could be treated rather than as a demonic possession. This idea lead to the medical model: the notion that mental illnesses have physical causes that can be diagnosed, treated and in some cases cured. This embrace of the medical model lead to more ethical treatment of individuals with PD and exploration of various treatment methods for those who suffer from PD.
