2 Why Do Societies Change?  Karl Marx  Stage Theorist : Social change happens quickly, not over time  Change must happen to reach a utopian state  In the Ideal society everyone has equal access to resources and everyone contributes their resources for the common good

4 Why Do Societies Change?  Emile Durkheim  Believed that diversity makes society stronger  What is diversity? How does it change society?  Hint: think economics  Division of Labor  As division of labor changes, so does society  Ex: Laws: Change form forcing people to do things too preventing a group form infringing upon another  Education increases as a specialized work force is needed

5 Why Do Societies Change?  Durkheim  How does Durkheim differ from Marx?  Unification not conflict is the source of change  What do you think!  Current trends show that conflict is in decline! What does this mean for society? Justify Marx or Durkheim.

7 Why Do Societies Change?  Max Weber  Agreed with Marx: Change is marked by conflict  Agreed with Durkheim: Resources are not the only cause for change  However, he believed that the future was more unpredictable.  Ex: Alternate realities
