4 Brief History of Apartheid in South Africa 1652-Apartheid system created by Dutch Boers (or Afrikaners) 1795-British seized the Dutch colony 1948-Stopped British control when Afrikaner-dominated Nationalist Party won election 1950s-Segregation laws passed through the decade 1961-International pressure against the South African government begins and South Africa is excluded from the Olympic Games 1964-Nelson Mandela of the African National Congress (anti- apartheid) jailed 1970s-80s-Student protests, then world boycotts of goods begin 1991-Apartheid repealed by white dominated government and Mandela released 1994-Mandela elected as 1 st South African black president
