1 Mark 5:35-42 35While Jesus was still speaking, some people came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. “Your daughter is dead,” they said. “Why bother the teacher anymore?”

2 Mark 5:35-42 36Overhearing what they said, Jesus told him, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.”

3 Mark 5:35-42 37He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James and John the brother of James. 38When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly.

4 Mark 5:35-42 39He went in and said to them, “Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep.” 40But they laughed at him.

5 Mark 5:35-42 After he put them all out, he took the child’s father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was. 41He took her by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum!” (which means “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”).

6 Mark 5:35-42 42Immediately the girl stood up and began to walk around (she was twelve years old). At this they were completely astonished.

8 Who has been the most significant person in your personal faith development?

9 Mark 5:21-24 21When Jesus had crossed over again in the boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around Him; and so He stayed by the seashore. 22One of the synagogue officials named Jairus came up, and on seeing Him, fell at His feet,

10 Mark 5:21-24 23and implored Him earnestly, saying, "My little daughter is at the point of death; [please] come and lay Your hands on her, so that she will get well and live." 24And He went off with him; and a large crowd was following Him and pressing in on Him.

11 A woman who had had a hemorrhage for twelve years (Mark 5:25)

12 Inclusion – one story inside another
Chapter 3 Chapter 14 Chapter 11

13 Differences in the stories –
Little girl was a bundle of joy for 12 years Woman had been sick for 12 years Rich influential Jewish man Poor unclean Jewish woman Private miracle that only a few see Public miracle that a lot of people see

14 Similarities in the stories –
Points of connection – Both have previous knowledge of Jesus Both believe circumstances are desperate Both believe Jesus is the only solution

15 Key to understanding both stories:
And He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace and be healed of your affliction.” (Mark 5:34)

16 Key to understanding both stories:
And He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace and be healed of your affliction.” (Mark 5:34)

17 Mark’s conclusion is that discipleship calls for radical faith.
Point of both stories Mark’s conclusion is that discipleship calls for radical faith.

18 Mark has been building to a crescendo:
Storm – “Be Quiet” Demons – “Get Out” Disease – “Get Away” Now the greatest test of all - Death… How radical is your faith now?

19 Mark also says, when you see a lethargic, dull, dead church don’t blame it on God.
Lethargic churches are not due to a powerless God but to a faithless people!

20 There is only one way to have radical faith…
To Be TESTED.

21 Three questions concerning radical faith:
Does your faith separate you from the crowd? holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; Avoid such men as these. (II Timothy 3:5)

22 Does your faith operate in the face of trials?
Do trials build and activate your faith or seem to eradicate it? People with radical faith don’t focus on circumstances they focus on promises.

23 Does your faith permeate your home?
“There are so many interesting things about your religion but why do Americans not worship their gods in their homes?”

24 Not just a song in our book, It’s the hope of our kids!
