Lesson 32

In what way did Jesus free us from sin, death, and the devil?

Since we still sin, in what way did Jesus free us from sin? 1 John 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. Jesus’ blood purifies us from the sin

Since we still sin, in what way did Jesus free us from sin? Romans 8:1 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus… punishment for sin is gone

Key Point #1 Since we still sin, Jesus purifies us from sin every day and removes the punishment we deserve for our sins.

Since we still die, in what way did Jesus free us from death? Luke 8:49-56

While Jesus was still speaking, someone came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue ruler. “Your daughter is dead,” he said. “Don’t bother the teacher any more.” Hearing this, Jesus said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed.” When he arrived at the house of Jairus, he did not let anyone go in with him except Peter, John and James, and the child’s father and mother. Meanwhile, all the people were wailing and mourning for her. “Stop wailing,” Jesus said. “She is not dead but asleep.” They laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. But he took her by the hand and said, “My child, get up!” Her spirit returned, and at once she stood up. Then Jesus told them to give her something to eat. Her parents were astonished, but he ordered them not to tell anyone what had happened.

Since we still die, in what way did Jesus free us from death? Luke 8:49-56

Since we still die, in what way did Jesus free us from death? John 11:11-14 After he had said this, he went on to tell them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going there to wake him up.” His disciples replied, “Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better.” Jesus had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant natural sleep. So then he told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead…”

Since we still die, in what way did Jesus free us from death? Acts 7:57-8:1 At this they covered their ears and, yelling at the top of their voices, they all rushed at him, dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. Meanwhile, the witnesses laid their clothes at the feet of a young man named Saul. While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” Then he fell on his knees and cried out, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” When he had said this, he fell asleep. And Saul was there, giving approval to his death. death is a sleep

Since we still die, in what way did Jesus free us from death? Daniel 12:2 Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt. Some wake up to hell

Since we still die, in what way did Jesus free us from death? 1 Thessalonians 4:14 We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. we wake up with Jesus in heaven

Key Point #2 Jesus freed us from death by making death a sleep from which we will wake up to life in heaven, rather than to eternal punishment in hell.

Since the devil still tempts us, in what way did Jesus free us from him? 1 John 3:8 He who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work. Jesus destroyed the devil’s power

Since the devil still tempts us, in what way did Jesus free us from him? James 4:7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Since the devil still tempts us, in what way did Jesus free us from him? Revelation 12:10-11 Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say: “Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ. For the accuser of our brothers, who accuses them before our God day and night, has been hurled down. They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony...” We’re not afraid of the devil’s temptations and accusations

Key Point #3 Jesus freed us from the devil by taking away the power of the devil’s temptations and accusations.

Evaluate… Because Jesus took away the guilt of our sins, we shouldn’t be bothered by the fact that we fall into sin every day.

Mark says, “Now if I’ve got this right, Jesus ransomed us from eternal death in hell but not from earthly death.” How do you respond?
