1 Comparative Claim Friday, November 14, 2014 Honors MYP

2 No Quick Write  We will be checking out Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck from the 2 nd floor library today. Make sure you have your ID.  If you don’t have your ID to check out the book today, you will need to get the book over the weekend.

3 Objective, Agenda, & Homework  Objective: Students will analyze information from two texts and write a comparative claim about the texts.  Agenda:  Book Check Out  Read 2 Texts  Formative #4: Comparative Claims  Homework: Greek roots 56-60 are due Monday.

4 Notes: Comparative Claims  Grading:  6 pts. for completion  6 pts. for the requirements  Requirements  2 titles = 1 pt.  2 authors = 1 pt.  Debatable = 1 pt.  Specific = 1 pt.  2 reasons = 1 pt.  1 sentence = 1 pt.

5 Examples  Benvolio is portrayed in a more honourable fashion in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet than in Luhrman’s Romeo +Juliet because he is honest and displays loyalty to Romeo.  Robinson’s Richard Cory in “Richard Cory” is less emotionally stable than Hamlet in Shakespeare’s Hamlet because he isn’t as confident and he makes poorer choices.  Template : The [conflict, character, or theme] in Shakespeare’s Othello is [debatable and specific] than Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men because [reason 1] and [reason 2].

6 2 Texts  Read the analysis of Desdemona from Othello.  What qualities does she have?  How does Shakespeare portray women based on the portrayal of Desdemona?  Read the analysis of Curley’s wife from Of Mice and Men.  What qualities does she have?  How does Steinbeck portray women based on the portrayal of Curley’s wife?

7 Write Your Claim  Now write a claim that compares Othello to Of Mice and Men using only the 2 passages.  You could compare and/or contrast the characters of Desdemona and Curley’s wife.  You could also create a theme about the portrayal of women and compare and/or contrast the theme based on the two texts.  Make sure that you include all the requirements of a comparative claim.  It’s okay if your claim does not turn out to be correct. After all, we’ve only read one of the two texts in its entirety.
