Why? What are the worst parts of the book? Why?

Objective, Agenda, and Homework Objective: Students will analyze the topic of homelessness and poverty by reading and article and creating a poster to represent the key ideas and facts. Agenda: ▫Reading Time and Quick Write ▫Words for Greek Roots 25-27 ▫Read 6 Articles about Poverty and Homelessness in Groups ▫Presentations of Articles and Notes Homework: ▫Read 15-20 minutes with your choice book. ▫Study Greek roots for 5 -10 minutes for Friday quiz.

Greek Roots 25-27 Using the word lists I gave you last week, look up the part of speech and definition of TWO WORDS FOR EACH ROOT. Then, draw a visual. ▫Look up one word for gyn. ▫Look up one word for log. ▫Look up one word for archae. If you were not here Friday, then look at the power point for those days on my website to get the 3 new roots with their meanings and word lists. Quiz is Friday! ▫You should really study this week’s words and last week’s words because the scores on the last quiz were not as high as usual. You have 15 minutes to look up your 6 words.

Jigsaw Activity A jigsaw activity is used when students need to read or cover a lot of information. Therefore, students are broken into groups, and each group is responsible for reading and becoming “experts” on what they read and/or learned. Each group presents their information to the class while the class takes notes.

Jigsaw Activity Continued Number off 1-6. Every student will get a copy of all 6 articles. However, each group will read ONE article about homelessness or poverty. ▫You will have about 10 minutes to read and highlight key information and facts/statistics. Then, as a group, you will make a poster with chart paper and markers that represents what you think the most important information was. Every group will present their poster. ▫Classmates will take notes on the back of the appropriate article during presentations. That way, you can use any of the 6 articles in your synthesis paper without having to read every word of all the articles.

Assigned Articles Group 1: “Poverty in America: A Special Report” Group 2: “Hunger in America: 2013 United States Hunger and Poverty Facts” Group 3: “Homelessness, Part 2: Families getting trapped in the cycle” Group 4: “Homelessness, Part 3: Trouble comes early for some” Group 5: “Homelessness, Part 4: For many, a long, long road” Group 6: “Losing Ground Part 1: Inequality (Equality Gap Grows for Minorities)”

Poster Title of the Article One sentence with the main idea or author’s claim about homelessness or poverty 3-5 facts, details, and/or statistics that best support your main idea Any other important information
