3 Essential Questions: 1. What is culture? 2. How do cultures develop? 3. What causes cultures to change? 4. Why has the rate of cultural change been increasing?

4 Key Vocabulary Acculturation = Process of accepting, borrowing, and exchanging ideas Cultural Diffusion = Movement of customs and ideas Cultural Landscape = Land that has been changed by humans to show their culture Cultural Trait = A group’s skills, customs, and ways of doing things Culture = The way of life of a group of people Technology = Tools, skills, and science knowledge

5 What are Examples of Culture? The language we speak The clothes we wear Subjects we study in school Music we listen to

6 What are Elements of Culture? The work we do, our behaviors, our beliefs, our traditions Families pass these on through generations

7 Elements of Culture Divided into material elements and non-material elements Material elements: Can be touched/used Houses, televisions, clothing, cars, etc. Non-material elements: Things that aren’t physical Language, religion, ideas/beliefs, government/laws

8 What are Examples of Cultural Landscapes? Religious or historical landmarks (Mount Rushmore, Stonehenge) Canals or repurposed land (filled in swamp for housing, etc.)

9 Does Culture Change? Over time cultural traits change; but culture itself changes very slowly.

10 What Changes Culture? Change in Environment New Ideas (i.e. Health) Technology Sharing Ideas

11 How do Changes in the Environment Change Culture? Weather change = climate change Affects the foods we grow, clothes we wear, and jobs

12 Other Concerns: What are some concerns about the environment ? Concerns about recycling Fuel efficient cars Clean energy sources Endangered species What are some recently discovered health problems? Poor eating habits Not enough exercise Threat of cigarettes, tobacco, alcohol UV Ray danger

13 Changes Due to Technology: Old technologies Fire Stone tools/weapons First forms of shelter New Technologies Radio/TV Internet Cell phones Medical discoveries Think about the differences these devices have made in your lives

14 How do Ideas Change Multiple Cultures? People migrate and travel all over the world cultural diffusion acculturation

15 Technology and the Speed of Change Why is cultural diffusion so rapid today? Why is Earth called a “global village?” What are the possible threats to a culture? Internet, TV, radio all send information quickly Modern transportation and communication tell everyone about far away places instantly Confusion, culture can be lost, traditions can be forgotten, culture can be perceived incorrectly

16 Directions On the next slide, complete the review questions: Write down both the QUESTION and the ANSWER There are 9 total questions. Once you have finished taking your notes and have answered all 9 review questions in your notebook, complete the Culture Project. When the project is finished, turn it in on Edmodo.

Use this program to create a collage that does the following: Slide 1: Title of this assignment (American Culture Collage) Your Name (First and Last) Slide 2: 15-20 pictures (school appropriate) that illustrate what you think of when you hear the phrase “American culture” Slide 3: A two-paragraph explanation that describes what culture is, and why those pictures represent American culture to you.
