4 4. How did the Gold Coast’s economy change after the British began encouraging farmers to grow cacao beans?-People stopped growing food crops because cocoa crops brought in more money, food had to be imported, people spent less time making crafts, and relied on imported factory goods.

When arguing for independence, how did Kwame Nkrumah respond to the European claim that the African colonies were not ready to rule themselves?-He pointed out that traditional African governments had ruled African lands for thousands of years. Britain was democratic yet they denied Ghana the right to have their own democracy.

Compared to other African colonies, when did Ghana gain independence? Ghana was the second colony to gain independence in Africa. This also inspired many other African nations to seek independence.

What caused people’s attitudes toward Nkrumah to change before and after his death? At first, Nkrumah was popular because of his fight for independence was successful. He was then thrown out of office because people blamed him for the country’s economic problems. When he died, many people felt he had done his best, and thought of him as a hero who led Ghana towards independence.
