Scientific Snowflakes Snowflakes are still a wonder to all of us today. Even though scientists aren’t, at the moment, able to fully explain why snowflakes form such exclusive shapes, we are bringing to you the wide story about one of nature’s beautiful mysteries. Snow crystals shaping contains different roles that play in the forming of one. Some of the roles in shaping a crystal are humidity and wind. According to scientists, the major role is played by temperature, although no one knows why. When the temperature is ranging from 30-20 degrees, they appear as pencil-like columns of ice. When the temperature is below 9 degrees, ornate, large plates form. To study your own snowflake, all you really need to have is cold, snowy weather, and a small magnifying glass, and you’re ready to go!

Fun Ideas Sick, bored, and stuck at home? We’ve got the perfect remedy! Try making our Homemade Carnival Game! Ball Toss Materials: 4 boxes (empty) 20 different types of balls (paper balls, bouncy balls, footballs, tennis balls, metal balls, etc.) Bucket (opaque) large bag (plastic) A large empty space (with walls, of course) Set-up: 1.Go to the large area and face one of the walls. 2.Take your large bag, and move 10 feet away from the wall. 3.Place all 4 boxes in a row, one foot in front of the same wall, and 1 foot apart. 4.Place the bucket right in between the boxes and the plastic bag. How to Play: Place all your balls in the bucket. Go up to the bucket and turn away from it. Quickly grab 10 balls from it, without looking. Sit back down at the bag. Examine your balls that you have. The balls will be your “weapons”. Your goal is to knock down all 4 boxes in 4 tries. Each box is worth 1 point. Try to beat your score each time! Have fun!

Dream Cause Why do people have dreams? This question has interested people for over a long period of time. Scientists do not know the exact answer but there are some theories. From what they have studied, the best answer is the rapid eye movement. The rapid eye movement takes place in the sleep cycle. During this you are most likely to remember your dream, especially when you are awakened from one. Most doctors believe dreams come from the subconscious mind. The subconscious mind is the totality of mental processes of which the individual is not aware. Without dreams we would go crazy. Dreams help with your memory. It helps refresh your mind. Some things you remember right now come from your dreams. Dreams are very important in our lives, and without them, it would be like having memory loss every day!

Tooth Cleanser Food residue can cause sticky plaque to form. Other microorganisms can create acids, that penetrate the tooth enamel, and can produce cavities. Toothpaste helps solve all of these problems! So how does toothpaste do it? Well, toothpaste contains abrasives that can help scrub away plaque. It also contains fluoride, which replaces the eaten hydroxypatite of the tooth with fluoropatite, to make it stronger. Xylitol is also put inside of it which can help prevent the growth of plaque. Always make sure to keep your own teeth healthy! Brush it every day at least twice, for about 2-3 minutes. Also, try making your own toothpaste! Toothpaste Ingredients: 6 tsps. of baking soda I tsp. salt 10-20 drops of flavoring (peppermint) 6 tsps. glycerin I drop of food coloring Directions: 1.Combine ingredients in small bowl and mix them thoroughly with a small spoon. 2.Add just enough water to form smooth thick paste that can stay on your brush. 3.Spoon mixture into container.

Chaos in the US Did you know that kids who watch TV eat more junk food than kids who don’t? This terrible action is caused by the commercials on different unhealthy fast food and sodas. The commercials urge kids to buy or eat junk food, and TV prevents children from exercising or doing any psychical activities. When you combine both problems you can get health problems such as diabetes, heart difficulties, and sleep disorders. Reporters have traveled to different schools (grades 5-10), and put them to a survey, asking how much TV they watch and how often they ate junk food/ healthy food. They figured out the more TV kids watched, the more unhealthily they ate. Analysts started recommending parents to give kids more healthy foods, and to help their young ones cut down on the amount of television they watch (and we recommend that, too). So, start eating more healthy foods and watch less TV! Above: Picture of TV with hamburger commercial. Red ‘X’ over it signaling NO TV!

Snowflake Difference Directions: Look at the 2 snowflakes. Find the difference between them. The differences do not have to do with the characteristics of the picture itself (height, length, width, etc.). The left one is the altered picture.

Kaitin’s Advice Column Fear can be pretty overwhelming, so now it’s your turn to control it yourself. There are quite a few ways to get rid of your fears, but I’ve chosen a few that I think will best help you. Now typically, people say the best way to get rid of your fear, is to face it, Personally, I think that is just silly remedy, because if you can face your fears, how is it a fear? However, if you are a daredevil type of person, I’d recommend you go for it! So, either ways, here are a few tips that make a little more sense to me. When you are feeling scared, calm yourself down by taking deep breaths, and think soothing thoughts. Another way, is to think of some thing silly (like maybe your fear being flushed down a toilet). Always remember, its OK to be scared! Don’t let fear hold you down any day!
