6 The President as Chief Executive May give executive orders –Rules for gt officials to follow 1948 end segregation President has power to appoint 4000 officials with approval by Congress –Selects his Cabinet (advisors) –His white House Staff

7 President as Commander in Chief President is leader of the armed forces When at war the President makes major strategic decisions President may send troops without Congress approval for only 60 days

8 President as Chief Diplomat Our representative to the world and nations Makes foreign policy –Relations with foreign countries Makes treaties with approval by senate Appoints ambassadors with approval by senate Makes executive agreements with out senate approval Joint statement by Presidents Nguyen Van Thieu and Nixon at Midway Island.

9 President as Legislative leader Congress considers the President on ideas on issues State of the Union Address Speech given by the pres to both houses of congress taxes, education, foreign policy Sets domestic policy plans for dealing with nations problems Pres can veto bills Makes the budget to carry out all programs

10 President Judicial powers Chooses Supreme Court Justices with approval of senate Can reduce punishments of criminals and pardons President George W. Bush announces his nomination Monday, Oct. 31, 2005, of Philadelphia Appeals Court Judge Samuel A. Alito, Jr., for Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, to replace the retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.
