5 The Enlightenment A 17 th and 18 th Century intellectual movement that stressed reason and thought and the power of individuals to solve problems. ◦ In Europe, where did people look for answers before the Enlightenment? ◦ What did people think about the nature of humans? Where people born good or bad?

6 Philosophy Love and pursuit of wisdom by intellectual means and moral self- discipline. Investigation of the nature, causes, or principles of reality, knowledge, or values, based on logical reasoning

7 What is truth? Discuss with a partner and try and come up with a definition!

8 Review What is the Enlightenment period? Where did people look for answers before the Enlightenment? What is absolute rule?

9 The Enlightenment Philosophes Reason – truth could be discovered by thought or logical thinking Nature – all that is natural is good Happiness – people can find happiness on earth Progress – society and humankind can improve Liberty – Protection from the government (Bill of Rights)
