Did You Know….. Very little bit of our water in the world is drinkable. Only 3% of the Earth’s water is fresh water. 97% of the water on Earth is salt water. 773 million people lack access to clean water. About 400 billion gallons of water are used in the U.S. per day. In one year, the average American residence uses over 100,000 gallons of water. (indoors and outdoors)

It’s Easy to Get Water in the U.S.

Water is pumped from lakes, rivers, or reservoirs through huge pipes to water treatment plants. There it is filtered to remove large pieces of debris, like twigs, dead fish, and bacteria. Water utilities treat nearly 34 billion gallons of water every day. Water in the U.S.

An underground network of pipes typically delivers drinking water to the homes and businesses served by the water system. We take our water supplies for granted, yet they are limited. Americans use much more water each day than individuals in both developed and undeveloped countries. Pipes Into Your Home

Sewage Treatment We have sewage treatment plants in the U.S. Disease-causing organisms are present in sewage. These need to be filtered out before the sewage can be released back into the environment. The goal is to reduce or remove organic matter, solids, nutrients, disease-causing organisms and other pollutants from the wastewater.

But people in some countries don’t have reservoirs, water treatment and sewage treatment plants anywhere near where they live.

They are not as lucky as we are.

Countries all over the world do not have access to clean water. 3.4 million people die each year from a water related disease. That is almost the entire city of Los Angeles. How many people are without safe drinking water? 345 million in Africa 196 million in South, West and Central Asia 32 million in Latin America and the Caribbean 200 million in Southeast and East Asia and Oceania Every 20 seconds a child dies from a water related disease.

Ethiopia India Philippines Percentage of Population Without Reasonable Access to Safe Drinking Water

Ethiopia The need for water and sanitation in Ethiopia is severe. Only 42% of the population has access to an improved water supply, and only 11% of the population has access to adequate sanitation services. In rural areas, these numbers drop even further. In rural Ethiopia, women and children walk up to six hours to collect water. Water-related diseases are among the principle causes of death in young children. Facts found at water.org

Philippines It is surrounded by salt water which is not drinkable. There is no money to pay for a way to clean their water. In the Philippines, water borne diseases cause 55 deaths each day. Only seven percent of the country’s total population is connected to sewer systems.

T he government doesn’t spend much money on clean water. They have dirty water because of monsoons which spread mud and dirt. 25 % of people in India live in poverty. O f 1.2 billion, 128 million lack safe water. 839 million have no sanitation services India Diarrhea causes more than 1,600 deaths daily—that’s as if eight 200-person jumbo-jets crashed to the ground each day.

….in the western Indian state of Gujarat (from National Geographic.com)

Procter and Gamble’s Discovery Put dirty water into a container. Add a PUR packet. Stir. When the sediment settles to the bottom, the water is safe. Procter and Gamble made PUR packets to help people in need get clean drinking water. The packet is like a water treatment plant in a pack. It’s very easy to use…

How can we help? We can donate money for packets. TEN CENTS buys ONE packet. ONE packet cleans TEN liters of water. ONE DOLLAR means ONE child gets clean water for FIFTY days. SEVEN DOLLARS and FIFTY CENTS means ONE child gets clean water for ONE YEAR.

Thank you for your help!!!
