3  Before we start class, you must fill out an interest inventory  This will count as your first class grade  Make sure you answer all the questions in complete sentences  This inventory counts as a class grade. Answer the questions to the best of your knowledge to get 100% You can skip only three questions of your choice.  The inventory will be collected and graded. An incomplete inventory will count as a zero. 2

5 4  This is an important year for you!  I will give you an introduction to our classroom. Please listen carefully!  If you were in Mr. Zindman and Ms. Denny’s class last year…please be patient.

6 5 I’m glad you are back!

7 6  My Background  I grew up on Long Island.  I went to school on Long Island.  I Graduated Penn State, S.U.N.Y at Stony Brook and Hofstra Universities.  I have degrees in Psychology and a master’s degree in Education.  My Experience  I’ve been teaching for many years.  I love teaching middle school!  I love MLO!  I think the students at MLO are the greatest!

13 12  To give you the academic tools you need to progress in the middle school.  In this class we will learn about U.S. History.  To provide a supportive learning environment.  Having a set of rules to ensure that we have a positive learning environment.  To have fun while we learn.  To make new friends and discover new interests.

14 13  Why am I assigned to this class?  What will we be doing in this class?  What will I learn from this class?  What tools will we be using in this class?  What are my requirements for this class?  How will I be evaluated ?  How will I be treated in this class?  What are the class rules?

15 14 Why am I assigned to this class?  To learn how to apply the history of American culture to your own life.  To help you make better decisions in your life based on the lessons we learn in American History.  To enable you to be an active participate in American government by voting when you become an adult!

23 22  In Social Studies we will learn about the first Native Americans and history of our nation.  We will examine pictures, places, movies and historical documents on U.S. and world history. Learning about American, African, and World History is fun!

24  How American History has effected the life of many cultures. For example, the struggle to end slavery.  How can we use the knowledge from American history to make the world a better place for all cultures.  How can learning about American History can prepare you for your future. 23

25 24  Will learn about American History from Early Native Americans to the Civil War.

26 25 8 th Grade Students  Will learn about history from the Civil War to the year 2012. Name the famous people.

27 26 We will learn about African history through out the year. How many famous black heroes can you name?

28  Learning about U.S. History trying to answer essential questions. What is an essential question?  It is a question that has no right or wrong answer.  It is a question that provides a true understanding about a topic.  It is a question that applies curriculum knowledge in everyday decisions and problem solving. 27 We will answer essential questions by examining sources such as documents, pictures, and video segments.

29  Who were the first Americans?  Why explore the Earth?  Why should we go to war?  Has technology changed history?  What role does natural resources play in history?  Is global warming changing history?  How can obtain peace in the Middle East? 28

30 29  We will be using the internet for school web projects!  Strict rules and appropriate behavior must be followed in using the internet.

31 30 Why do we need rules in school?

32  You will be treated with respect. 31 Remember respect is a “two way street!”

33 32  You are to complete all class assignments and homework. In a timely matter. See www.mrzindman.com for all assignments. www.mrzindman.com  You are to come to class on time. Lateness will count against your class grade! Arrive three times late to a class and your parent is contacted!  You are to behave appropriately at all times!

34 33 Bathroom Rules  You must ask appropriately and politely to use the bathroom. You must have permission!  You must have an appropriate bathroom pass issued from an adult to gain access to the bathroom. No bathroom passes are to be issued the first and last ten minutes of every period. You will be allowed to use the bathroom only 2 times during the month in class.  No bathroom passes issued for poor class behavior. If you continue to misbehavior you will lose bathroom privileges. Be Smart!  No passes first or last period of the day!

35  You need to read the school rules in your agenda book. Discuss the rule with your parents.  You need to sign the agenda book with your parents 34

41 40 No cell phones or communication devices in class! If discovered they will be taken and given to Ms. Denny or Mr. Zindman. If you do not listen the phone will be given to a school administrator or security officer immediately!

42 41 Video games from home are not permitted in class! If discovered they will be removed and handed over to an administrator or security officer!

43 42 Computers are only to be used for computer class assignments from Mr. Zindman exclusively! Do not abuse the computers! If you are caught sneaking on the computer playing games, or listening to music you will be disconnected and lose computer privileges! If you still refuse to cooperate, your parents and the technology department will be contacted and you will loose district wide computer privileges.

45 Your grading will be determined in the following manner:  10% Class notes  60% Class exams  30% Homework 44 Total: 100% of your grade = Quarter grade Midterm and final exams account for 33% of your final grade
