2. Definition A direct object is a word or group of words representing the person or thing upon the action of a verb is performed or toward which it is directed. Example: The crowd will cheer for the President

3. Where Can a Direct Object Be Found? A direct object can be found by asking Whom? or What? about an action verb. Another useful method for determining whether a noun or noun phrase acts as the direct object, is to attempt to rephrase the sentence in the passive voice. If you can turn the sentence into the passive form, then the direct object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive sentence. If the noun or noun phrase is not a direct object, then the sentence will not convert into a passive form.

4. Indirect v. Direct A direct object receives the action of the verb, while an indirect object tells for or to whom the action was performed. These sentence components are always nouns or pronouns. Unless the sentence is a question, they normally come after the verb.

5. Transitive Verbs When a verb has a direct object it is called a transitive verb. A verb that does not have a direct object is known as an intransitive verb. Most verbs are transitive. He snores. You can't snores something, which makes snores an intransitive verb. Isabella loves pie. Q: loves what? A: pie. This makes loves the transitive verb.

6. Complements and Direct Objects: The Difference If you ask what? with a linking verb, you will find a verb complement; not a direct object Samantha is happy. (Step 1. Find the verb = is) (Step 2. Ask What? = happy.) (However, on this occasion, happy is not the direct object. This is because it is a linking verb.

7. Remember this... If there is an indirect object, there must be a direct object. However, you can have a direct object without an indirect object Indirect objects and direct objects come only after ACTION VERBS

8. Examples Maria and Carlos served pie and ice cream for dessert. Our cat caught a mouse. The boss saw her down town. Anna ate chicken for dinner Lina met Omar at the mall.
