3 Subject Who or what the sentence is about
The subject is the who/what is doing the action of the sentence Simple subject: one word Complete subject: simple subject + modifiers (adjectives, articles, etc.) The scary clown chased the frightened children around the party.

4 Ask: who or what verb Paul runs.
We read through the story during class. The students will cheer happily on the last day of school.

5 The predicate The predicate tells us about the subject. It includes a verb. Simple predicate: verb Transitive verb (vt): takes a direct object I like pizza. Intransitive verb (vi): does not take a direct object He walks quickly. Complete predicate: The verb + all modifiers

6 Ask subject what? Paul runs. We read through the story during class.

7 Prepositional phrase Can be part of the subject of predicate
Starts with a preposition (on, after, through…) Ends with a noun or pronoun Is labeled prep phr.

8 Find the prepositional phrases
