2 Remember Direct objects: – Answer the questions ________ or ________? Steps to finding direct objects: 1. Find the verb. 2. Figure out if the verb is action or linking. 3. If the verb is action, ask whom or what to find the direct object.

3 Examples Once airborne, the glider pilot directs the path of the flight. Go through your steps: – Verb: directs – Is it an action verb? Yes! – Pilot directs the what? Path…the pilot directs the path.

4 Indirect Objects An indirect object is a noun, pronoun, or word group that sometimes appears in a sentence containing a direct object Answer the questions to whom or to what or for whom or for what? If a sentence has an indirect object, it always has a direct object also.

5 Steps to find indirect objects 1.Find the direct object first. a.Find the verb b.Is it action or linking? c.If action, ask whom or what? 2.After finding the direct object, ask the following questions to find the indirect object: a.To whomc. for whom b.To whatd. for what

6 Examples The waiter gave her the bill. Gave is an action verb. The waiter gave the what? –The bill. The waiter gave the bill to whom? –her *Her is a pronoun, it answers the question to whom, and the sentence has a direct object (bill), so her is the indirect object.

7 Other things Like direct objects, indirect objects may be compound. If the word to or for is used, the noun or pronoun following it is a part of a prepositional phrase and cannot be an indirect object.

8 What’s the difference between the two sentences? 1. The ship’s captain gave orders to the crew. 2. The ship’s captain gave the crew orders.
