Conversation One.

Past tense: When we talk about something that has already happened. We use the past tense. Past PresentFuture E.g. Yesterday, I went to the supermarket.

Notebook: Past tense questions. What did you do last Saturday? Where did you go? How was your weekend? What did you do yesterday afternoon? Where did you go last vacation? Did you get home early last night?

Past tense questions: Sample answers. What did you do last Saturday? I played basketball with my friends. Where did you go? I went to the beach with my wife last Saturday. How was your weekend? It was great. I watched a movie on Sunday. What did you do yesterday afternoon? I wrote some new lesson plans for my students. Where did you go last vacation? I went to Tokyo last vacation. Did you get home early last night? Yes I did. I was very tired!

Third Person: Ask your partner. What did she do last Saturday? Where did he go? How was his weekend? What did she do yesterday afternoon? Where did he go last vacation? Did she get home early last night?

Time expressions. When we use the past tense, it’s important to say when something happened. E.g. I went to the bank last Saturday. We had dinner together on Monday night. He watched baseball two weeks ago. I brushed my teeth this morning. She traveled to Europe last year.

Used to. When something started in the past, and doesn’t happen now, we can say “used to”. E.g. I used to be a student, but now I’m a teacher. I used to drive a blue car, but now I drive a brown one. I used to smoke cigarettes, but I don’t smoke now.

Notebook: Did you use to be a high school student? Did you use to ride a bicycle? Were you shy in high school? Write three more sentences about something you used to do, but you don’t anymore. E.g. I used to play rugby, but now I play tennis.
