Energy Sources and Percent  Coal-  Natural Gas-  Wind Energy-  Hydroelectric Energy-  Biomass Energy-

Advantages and Disadvantages of Coal Advantages- - Very cheap to generate electricity - Good supply in the United States - Very easy to transport - Gets cleaned very well  Disadvantages- - Mining coal can cause erosion - Mining Can harm water sheds - Combustion can produce more air pollution and acid rain then any other resource - Combustion produces air pollution such as oxides, nitrogen and air toxins

Advantages and Disadvantages of Natural Gas  Advantages- - Large percent of supply in the United states - Good for heating homes and buildings - Produces the least amount of pollutants of any kind of fossil fuel - Very easy to transport  Disadvantages- - Costs are increasing - Drilling and extraction may cause environmental damage in some areas - Combustion produces pollutants such as sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides

Advantages and Disadvantages of Wind Energy  Advantages- - Inexpensive to use and maintain - Permanent energy source - Produces no type of pollution - Creates energy that has no cost - Short installation time  Disadvantages- - Visually displeasing to some people - May kill flying animals that fly by them - You have to have wind to use it

Advantages and Disadvantages of Hydroelectric energy  Advantages- - Have lots of water to use in some places - Does not produce air pollution - Does not produce green house gases and carbon dioxide - It sometimes can have positive effects on other things like flood control, irrigation and recreation  Disadvantages- - Dam design can change natural course of river - Can impact fish reproduction - Can prevent fish migration and kill them - Changes natural water level which can impact plants and animals

Advantages and Disadvantages of Biomass Energy  Advantages- - Can reduce landfill space - Can be used as fuel - Can be a sustainable energy source if managed properly - Can utilize some animal, food, and plant wastes  Disadvantages- - Supply challenges exists especially in urban areas - Reduces the nutrients returned to the soil - Mixed sources require separation before burning - Combustion produces air pollution
