Food Webs and Food Chains

1.Break up the hamburger into individual ingredients 2. Where specifically does each ingredient come from? (The store/fridge is not an option!!!) 3. List the order in which you think most energy is found with the most being on the bottom and the least being on top

What is Energy?  Dictionary.com -the capacity for vigorous activity  Wikipedia -in physics, it is the capacity of a body or system to do work  MY DEFINITION - Something that cause things to happen or work

Think about what you do on a daily basis and list them in your notebook. Leave a BLANK SPACE next to them we will be coming back to it Talk it out with your neighbor!

So then what happens to the energy??

Energy gets….  TRANSFORMED!!!

Forms of Energy  Kinetic Energy- Energy of movement in response to gravity  Potential Energy- Stored energy in response to gravity  Thermal Energy- Heat  Electrical Energy  Chemical Energy-Digestion  Sound Energy  Nuclear Energy  Solar Energy

Go back to your note book  Match each thing you did on your day with the form of energy in the previous slide

Where is your main source of energy coming from?

The sun

Predation Game  You will be working in groups of two  The purpose of the game is to see which one can make more connections within 1 minute  Draw 1 card at a time from the cup then place it on top of the white board  Draw an arrow pointing from the prey to the predator  Each connection is worth 1 point  The person not playing the first time will keep track of the connections of the player and vise versa  We will play for a total of 5 rounds each person  The person with more connections will win and might win a price

Think about this:  Which organism comes first and why is it important to have it?  Is it better to extend your model to higher levels or marke sure you have enough organisms at lower levels to support the ones above it?

Food Chain  Sequence of who eats whom in a biological community  Shows the transfer of energy  Linear

Producers Primary Consumers Secondary Consumers Tertiary Consumers Trophic level 2 Trophic level 3 Trophic level 4 Trophic level 1

Food Web  Show multiple interactions of energy flow among different types of organisms  More realistic

Producers Producers are ALWAYS in the first trophic level. They are autotrophs, meaning they make their own food. Arrows point AWAY from producers!!!

Primary Consumers Any organism that feeds directly on a producer is a primary consumer. Usually primary consumers are herbivores, meaning they only eat plants.

Secondary Consumers Organisms that feed on primary consumers are called secondary consumers. Many are carnivores, eating only meat, although some eat both meat and plants. Those are omnivores

Tertiary Consumers Tertiary consumers get their energy from eating secondary consumers. Tertiary consumers tend to be at the top of the food chain and are usually carnivores.

Detrivores/Decomposers Decomposers eat dead and decaying matter. ALL ARROWS SHOULD POINT TO A DECOMPOSER !!!

Food Web A food web is made of many food chains. Is this more stable than a food chain?

Questions 1. What will happen to the number of clown fish if the sharks become vegetarian? 2. What effect will this have on the number of zooplankton? 3. What will happen to the Blue Regal fish if a disease wipes out the small invertebrates.
