10 What is Physical Activity Any bodily movement produced by the skeletal muscles that is above daily functioning that results in greater energy expenditure (burn calories)

11 What is Exercise A formal type of physical activity which is planned and prescriptive in nature and based on the FITT Principle  frequency, intensity, time and type

12 What is Active Living a way of life in which physical activity is valued and integrated into daily life an active living concept allows each person to choose the activities they enjoy

13 What is Physical Fitness The bodies ability to adapt to the demands of physical effort, that is to perform vigorous levels of activity without becoming fatigued

14 Components of Physical Fitness Health Related: related to good health and reduced risk of hypokinetic disease (caused by lack of exercise)  Ex. Obesity, Diabetes Skill Related: related to optimal sport or work performance vs health

15 Health Related Cardiovascular fitness: the ability of your cardiovascular and respiratory systems to provide fuel and O2 to the muscles during sustained activity Body composition the relative % of muscle, fat, bone and other tissue in the body Muscle endurance: the ability of the muscle to repeatedly exert themselves (continuous) Muscular strength: the ability of the muscles to exert an external force (once) Flexibility (ROM): the range of motion available in a joint

16 Skill Related Agility: ability to rapidly and accurately change the direction of movement of the body Balance: ability to maintain equilibrium while stationary or while moving Coordination: the ability to use the senses with the body parts to perform motor tasks smoothly and accurately Power: ability to transfer energy into a force at a fast rate Reaction time: the time elapsed between a simulation and the beginning of a reaction to the simulation Speed: ability to perform and movement in a short period of time

17 Health vs Wellness Health: is a individuals total physical, social, emotional, mental and spiritual status Wellness: having the components of health adequately balanced, paying attention to and improving all aspects of health

18 Dimensions of Wellness Social ability to interact well with other people and the environment. Having satisfying personal relationships Physical: ability of all the bodies systems to function effectively in meeting the demands placed upon it affected by lifestyle habits, heredity and circumstances Spiritual: having a set of values, beliefs and goals that is different for everyone being at peace with yourself and the choices that you have made Intellectual: the ability to learn and use information enhanced through formal structures and life experience Emotional the ability to control emotions and express them appropriately able to cope with daily stressors improved by a positive self concept, self esteem and self confidence
