3
The Importance of Good Health ► Health is the combination of physical, mental/emotional, and social well-being. ► Health is dynamic (subject to constant change); your health is a point on the health continuum and ranges from a high level of health to premature death. ► See Figure 1.1 on Page 5.

Promoting Your Health ► The decisions you make each day affect your health. ► Some habits that promote good health. Get 8 – 10 hours of sleep each night. Start each day with a healthy breakfast. Eat a variety of nutritious foods each day. Be physically active at least 20 minutes, 3+ times a week. Maintain a healthy weight.
5
Avoid tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs. Abstain from sexual activity before marriage. Manage stress. Maintain positive relationships. Practice safe behaviors to prevent injuries. ► A key to your wellness is prevention! ► Health education is important because it gives people the tools to become and stay healthy.

► Healthy People 2010 focuses on healthy individuals, families, and communities. Healthy People 2000 failed miserably…aside from this textbook, I have not heard much about H.P. 2010. ► Health literacy A health-literate individual is a critical thinker, problem solver; responsible and productive citizen; self-directed learner; and effective communicator.

Your Health Triangle ► Formerly referred to as “Wellness Wheel”. ► Three elements of health are connected like a triangle – All three sides are equally important. ► Physical health – how well your body functions. ► Mental/Emotional Health – Your feelings about yourself, how well you meet demands of daily life, your ability to process information. ► Social Health – the way you get along with others.
8
Influences on Your Health ► Your health is influenced by your heredity. ► Your health is influenced by your environment. Physical environment – safety of neighborhood, air pollution, environmental smoke. Social environment – family and other people you have daily contact with. Also, peers are part of social environment. Another part of your environment is your culture.
9
► Your health is influenced by your attitude. ► Also influenced by your behavior. You have a great deal of control over your own behavior. ► Your health is influenced by the media – radio, television, film, newspapers, magazines, books, and the Internet. ► You are also influenced by advances in technology.
10
Understanding Health Risks ► Risk behaviors ► The first step in becoming responsible for your health is to increase your awareness of risk behaviors in your life. ► Most teens are avoiding risk behaviors by engaging in these behaviors: Using Seat Belts Not Smoking Cigarettes Not using Alcohol or Illicit Drugs Participating in Physical Activity Three or More days a week. ► Cumulative risks increase your likelihood of experiencing negative consequences eventually.
11
Abstaining from Risk Behaviors ► Abstinence – Better to learn this word now…you will hear it a lot this semester! ► When you abstain from tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs, you avoid many negative consequences like addiction, serious harm to the body and even death, social isolation, legal consequences. ► Abstaining from sexual activity helps you avoid worrying/dealing with unplanned pregnancy; Sexually Transmitted Diseases and HIV, emotional problems related to sexual activity – guilt, regret, rejection.
