Welcome to Clearview MS Cross Country 2015! Co-Head Coaches: Mr. Rosa & Mrs. Coleman

Why Run? http://6abc.com/sports/12-year-old-running-the-world-for- good-cause/848978/ http://6abc.com/sports/12-year-old-running-the-world-for- good-cause/848978/ Why are you here? What do you hope to accomplish this season? THINK about these important questions because by the end of today’s meeting you will need at least 2 goals for the season.

Can You… Run at least 1 mile without stopping? If the answer is YES, then you are in the right place. If the answer is NO, you may want to consider a different after school activity. On the first day of practice all of you will be required to run 1 mile on the track at any pace without stopping as a prerequisite for participation in middle school cross country.

Who are the Coaches? Mr. Rosa – Science Teacher Rm. 401 Mrs. Coleman – ELA Teacher Rm. 407 Contact Information: Mr. Rosa: rosaky@clearviewregional.edurosaky@clearviewregional.edu Mrs. Coleman: colemansh@clearviewregional.edu colemansh@clearviewregional.edu

When is Practice? MONDAY – THURSDAY after school until 4:00. Must have a water bottle (water and/or Gatorade), running sneakers, weather-appropriate exercise clothes for practice each day. Be prepared to run at least 1-3 miles each day at practice. Mileage will increase as the season progresses. Meet in the gym after 2 nd run bell, get changed in the locker rooms and get into your squad lines for attendance. Please don’t ask “ARE WE RUNNING TODAY?” Because the answer will always be….. YES

What is our Attendance Policy? You must attend practice each day for the duration and have a ride home at 4:00. You are allowed 2 unexcused absences (no parent contact) OR 5 excused absences (with parent contact) over the course of the season. Missing more than 5 practices for any reason will result in dismissal from the team. If practice needs to be canceled an e-mail will be sent to parents, and a reminder text/announcement will sent to the students. An afternoon announcement will also be made in school. Do not interrupt Mr. Rosa or Mrs. Coleman’s classes during the school day to ask about practice/meet cancelations.

How Will You Be Grouped? “A Group Runners” – Top runners on the team, will ride the bus to all away meets. “B Group Runners” – Still developing or injured runners. DO NOT ride the bus to away meets. Grouping is based ONLY on times recorded during races/practices on our home course. “B Group Runners” are welcome to attend away meets but parents must provide their transportation. Coaches will determine qualifying times for the “A Group”, and students may move between the groups throughout the season if their times improve or drop.

How Do Meets Work? Dual Meets: Against 1 other school (home or away) Shoot-Outs & Opens: Against multiple schools (at GCC, Shalick and Delsea), sometimes chip-timed Usually boys race all together, and then girls race all together. Dual meets are under an hour, shoot-outs and opens are also quick, however we will usually wait to receive medals.

What Do I Need for Meets? Water/Gatorade! (NO ENERGY DRINKS!) Clearview gym uniform (shirt tucked in) Sweatshirt for cooler days before/after races NO jewelry of any kind is allowed Snack for after race Inhaler if necessary Good running sneakers (I recommend Asics, Nike Free are not recommended for XC, however they will still work) Mullica Hill Running Co. or Sports Authority for sneakers

What Do the Coaches Expect? Attend all practices and meets with a positive attitude and a willingness to work hard!
